BIOGRAPHY: The following is an account written in the words of Lee Luella Miller Condos Roberts:
When I was 14 my father told me that he was a Llewellyn and I, a Llewellynah, pronounced "Luell" and "Luella". But on my birth record, the doctor wrote me as Lee Luella. He showed all the records he had of the Miller ancestors and to be mine only on his death.
Again, in July 1967, we talked of this and when he died in September 1967, I asked my stepmother, Fern, for the records. She said she couldn't find them, but that they didn't belong to me anyway. I think she gave them to my half-sister, Priscilla.
The papers and records and birth records and this one Bible was written in Welsh as were many of the others and dated back to before 1800. He had a few pictures in tint-type. He showed and explained to me to pass it on as he would be the last Llewellyn and I the last Llewellynah.
I've had all information for years but it was my brother's daughter, Carlene, that got me to make copies for relatives.

BIRTH YEAR CONFLICT: [LeAnn McRoberts, May 2007]
World War I Draft Registration for Luell Webster Miller lists 1888 for year of birth not 1887. This makes more sense since sister Jessie was born in August of 1886 and if Luell were born in January of 1887 then he would've been 4 months premature and in that time, it is unlikely he would've survived.
Also, the 1900 census records his year of birth as 1888, however, the month is recorded as Oct which is incorrect.

Known as "Brownie Miller" to every-one in the Branch County, Michigan area.
The story goes: (from grandpa himself) When John Webster received his pension from the Civil War in 1898 he bought all of the children new clothes. Luell, 11 years old, was all dressed up in a brown suit and shoes. His father laughed and said to him, "little brownie", which stuck as a nickname for life.
**Homesteaded a farm in Montana 1909-10 with his wife Vernabele-his mother, mother-in-law and step father-in-law came with him. Returned to Michigan in Sept 1910. The 1909-10 was a disastrous winter and the women were homesick. They had to travel 6 miles to get water and the closest neighbors were 12 miles away. (Family oral history from Edith Lint, her daughter and Luell Miller) .
After prohibition and the rum running episode, he bought four farms in- farm #1 Kinderhook & #4 California Twp farm -Algansee Twp farm #2 and Steuben Co., Indiana farm #3 (near Pleasant Lake, Indiana).
He had invested his money on horses and hogs and went to Wyoming every year to buy horses. The most notable instance was the purchase of the brother of Dan Patch for stud and had the largest steel barn east of the Mississippi in California Twp. Almost as large as a football field 300 ft long and 40 ft wide (I know, because I walked it many times while working for him in 1947-8) He also had 21 registered Holsteins that I milked before school every morning and after school at night. The best thing I liked about working there was in the fall when we castrated the pigs - all the Rocky Mountain Oysters I could eat for a week. All I received for my service were room and board.
Lived at his home on Coldwater Lake in the summer and a home in Florida in the winte. The house on the lake burned down in 1948 and had it rebuilt in 1949 ($100,000). He gave the farm #1 to his daughter Priscilla in 1946 and bought 5,000 laying hens for his other daughter, Barbara in Indiana in 1947.

BIOGRAPHY:
According to my mother, Lee Luella Edyth Miller Roberts, George had no siblings. His parents had him late in their lives and after they died, he was raised by relatives. However, correspondence from my first cousin, Deane Miller, indicates that this is not correct.
Excerpt from Deane Miller correspondence:
George Unroe was the son of Michael Unroe and Mary Jane Wilhem, daughter of John and Margaret Sizer [sic] of Rockbridge, Virginia.
Michael was the son of George Armand Unroe and Elizabeth Tribbett, daughter of John and Elizabeth Siders of Rockbridge, Virginia (1880 Michigan census California Twp - living with them were Genevia, George, and grandchildren, Charles and Mary Morey, children of Michael’s daughter, Sarah, and husband David Morey who had died the same year, 1879).
Not to far was the Paul family, David Paul & family next to his son George Paul-a little way from them was O. J. Paul, Edith & daughter Edna-John & Martha Miller were living in Kinderhook Twp with their daughter, Ella, born in 1877.
George, son of Adam and Christian Armentrout (daughter of Johan Heinrich Armentrout and Mary Elizabeth Reish) came to America 1739 on the ship “Samuel” with his brothers, Philip and Johan Frederick.
Adam was the son of Jorge Armand Unroeauxe and Laurette.

The life of Edythe Lylah Belle Lynt Cross Unroe Paul as told to her granddaughters, Lee Luella Edyth Miller and Maxine Vivian Miller.
VOICE OF EDYTHE BELLE BRENTON:
My earliest memories, begging my mother a story as she lay on the cot as she was very tired and ill, as she was always in those days. She told me this day that I was five years old and big enough to wash my feet as she didn't want me to "meet my maker with dirty feet." "My lovey," she said, "you were born a year after the war ended on March 5, 1866 and your Daddy died of wounds suffered in that war when you were just a baby. I married his cousin who you know as your stepfather, George Cross."
After my mother died, I lived with his relatives until I met and married George Unroe, who told me his parents, Guy Unroeaux, had come to this country just before he was born and no one knew how to pronounce his name as they came from France and it was a French name so he dropped the last three letters and he became George Carl Unroe and his mother's name was Laurette who was also French.
We had married in 1887 and had five children, the first born November 1888 and died stillborn. George worked for the Ohio railroad as a brakeman and in March 1903 he was crushed between two freight cars. With four children, the oldest fourteen years old (Verna Belle), I married his friend and our neighbor, Otis Jay Paul, in 1905 who had several children all grown and married with children. Your stepfather was always called Jay. We moved to Detroit after my four children married and Jay worked in one of the large factories there, moving back down to a farm around Coldwater Lake after World War I ended. Leaving the farm in 1919, Jay got a job with Pratt's Manufacturing Co. and as you know, one year after you (Maxine) were born, your parents divorced in 1921.
I was born Edythe Lylah Belle Lynt whose father left Wales, met and married my mother, Estelle, in England and they came to America, finally settling in both Ohio and Indiana where I was born.
AFTERWORD BY LEE LUELLA:
After our grandmother Paul's death, which we did not hear of until months later, I compared the dates she told us with the dates on the obituary. I questioned it and was told that friends and neighbors gave the dates as close as they knew them so on the obituary and tombstone, the actual dates are incorrect. She would have been 101 years old if she had lived 2 months longer.
I have copied the facts as she told them to my sister and me while I lived with her and my step-grandfather after my parents divorced in 1921. This is the story of my mother, Verna Belle Unroe Miller Tabor's mother, Edythe Belle Lynt Cross Unroe Paul.

UNROE HERITAGE
The following is an account written in the words of Lee Luella Miller Condos Roberts:
France - early 1700's to Novia Scotia (Acadia); banished to the U.S. 1812 -1815.
In 1969, talking to my Uncle Carl Unroe about the dates concerning our Grandma Paul (and Miller) relatives, he said information was given by a neighbor because he was drunk with grief.
He told me to go talk to the woman. She said she really didn't know the dates when asked so just gave them what she thought might be right. Documents and Grandma's bible that I have says she was born March 5, 1886 [I have Bible, Lee L. Roberts.]
Uncle Carl said to me in 1969 that he had years ago hired an agency, "Tracing Your Ancestors" to trace the Unroe family. He said it took over three years and was very costly. He gave information he had passed down past through the ages from father and mother of Unroe descent.
The agency started with our grandfather and worked back through the years. Grandfather was an only son who had no relatives. He worked for the Ohio railroad where he met Edythe Lylah Cross, married her and had five children; a still born son in 1888, Verna Belle in 1889, Florence Ellen in 1890, Guy in 1891 and Carl in 1895. Grandpa Unroe was killed when Verna Belle was 14 years old. Later Grandma married Grandpa Paul who had children with children.
The agency traced the Unroes back north through the eastern states and into Canada. Records show that in the early 1700's, the French Huguenots in Northern France were religiously persecuted and all left for free land in Nova Scotia in eastern Canada.
In 1750's, America and England fighting both Canada and the colonies. English claimed the settlement in Canada then known as Acadia (Nova Scotia) settled by the French Huguenots and were all banished. The Unroeaux families wandered south through farmland and became horse trainers for wealthy owners through the Civil War (1861-1865), managing to stay together.
Births and deaths entered in small bible belonging to Edythe Lynt Cross Unroe, given to her on her wedding day December 12, 1887 by George C. Unroe. Given to me, Lee Luella Miller Roberts August 1969 by Uncle Carl Unroe.
Edythe Cross Unroe married O.J. Paul December 19, 1905. O.J, Paul died January 1942 (was a descendent of original Welsh clan that migrated to New York and Pennsylvania in 1800's).
After reading through the material from "Tracing Your Ancestors" and taking notes, Uncle Carl took me to the court records and asked to see them. What he found didn't compare with the records and information he had. When he questioned it, he was told the information was supposedly gathered for the U.S. Census and was very often incorrect, taken from uneducated workers, gathered from neighbors or gossips who only guessed dates of birth or death and put their own spelling of names.
In April of 1961, I moved from Michigan to California. In September 1967, I flew back for my father's funeral. My cousin, Leonard Unroe, was there and I asked him to take me to Coldwater to see Grandma Paul and Uncle Carl. He told me that Grandma Paul had died in January. I asked why I wasn't notified and he said that the didn't know the addresses of any of his cousins. Both Uncle Carl and my stepmother verified her death as January 1967.
On Uncle Carl's death, I was to be given all this information, death and birth records. His son took all and wouldn't share with me.

GIVEN NAME/MIDDLE NAME/SURNAME CONFLICT: [LeAnn McRoberts, Oct 2006 & amended Jun 2007]
My mother's information on her grandmother gives first name of Marta and middle name of Gwenyth or Irene.
Martha, in addition to other family members seem to have also adopted the alternate surname spelling of WEAGE after the 1870 census and before the 1880 census. Martha's surname is found as Wedge in 1870 census, however, documentation of her marriage to John Miller shows her surname as Weage. Father, Daniel, appears to be the only one who maintained the surname Wedge.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2007]
Censuses have her recorded in her father, Daniel Wedge's, household with the surname of Wedge. Possibly the spelling of Weage occurred from a transcription error of a handwritten document and was perpetuated.
MAIDEN-NAME-CONFLICT: [LeAnn McRoberts, Oct 2006]
There are several databases on Rootsweb that have Martha's maiden name as Wedge. However, I have received government documents from my cousin, Dean Miller, that confirm her maiden name as "Weage". These documents are marriage and death certificates, and John Miller's pension application, the Declaration for Widow's Pension and the Drop Order report (for both john and Martha) from the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Pension.
My mother, daughter of Luell Webster Miller and Martha's granddaughter, also gave Weage as her maiden name.

The suicide attempt was discovered by Virgil Miller, her son. The information I got from my dad and aunt Marcella is Jessie and her husband were trying to get her pension by commiting her to a mental hospital. She cut her throat and her head fell tilted so it pinched off the artery and she lived two more days. After she died, Virgil could not cope with the situation so he packed up and went to New York, never to be heard from again.

WHEREABOUTS: [Info provided 11 Oct 2006 by LaDeane Webster Miller, grandson of Martha Weage Miller]
The suicide attempt of Martha Miller was discovered by Virgil Miller, her son. The information I got from my dad and aunt Marcella is Jessie and her husband were trying to get her pension by commiting her to a mental hospital. She cut her throat and her head fell tilted so it pinched off the artery and she lived two more days. After she died, Virgil could not cope with the situation so he packed up and went to New York, never to be heard from again.M iii ERNEST MILLER 1, 2 was born on 26 Oct 1882 in most likely Branch Co., MI.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2007]
There are some discrepancies in this census but it is more likely than not this is the son of John Webster Miller & Martha S. Irene Wedge. Birth month is recorded as Nov not October and father's birthplace is recorded as England not Pennsylvania. Since he is recorded as a servant, it is possible someone other than Ernest gave this information to the census taker.F iv JESSIE MILLER 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born on 22 Aug 1886 in most likely Branch Co., MI. 1840 - ALLEN TWP., CUMBERLAND CO., PA
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2007]
This is a possible 1840 census for John Miller. Age range for John S. Miller is 30 under 40 and John Miller would've been around 40 years of age. The male 20 under 30 could be eldest son David. However, sons Frederick and John, are not recorded and possibly were in school.
Barbara Miller's obituary states she had 13 children so the females under 5 and age 5 under could be children that did not survive. Female age 30 to 40 would be wife Barbara.

John Miller's age is off by at least 7 years.
It is highly unlikely there were 2 sons named Frederick. In later censuses, there is a son Joseph born in 1846 that would've been 4 years old in 1850 and I've seen a database showing Joseph's middle name as Frederick. It is not known who Ann Robison is.
There is also a check mark in the column "married within the year" for 14 year old John which is not confirmed. Also, his age is off by quite a bit. Records have him born in 1830 which would've made him 20 years old in 1850 and that would've made more sense for him to be recorded as married.

1870 - CALIFORNIA TWP., QUINCY P.O., BRANCH CO., MI
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2007]
Given his age and place of birth it seems likely this is our John Miller, however, no idea who this Smith family is. Possibly he was working for the head of household and so was included in the census. Son, John Webster Miller, was recorded living in Branch Co., MI in the 1870 census which is also why I think this is a viable possibility. It is also stated in his obituary that he was living with son, John, at the time of his death.
I have not found wife, Barbara Miller, elsewhere in the 1870 census.

"STEUBEN REPUBLICAN" JULY 16, 1879, PAGE 5 COLUMN 2 JOHN MILLER
The funeral service of JOHN MILLER, who died at the residence of his son, John Miller Jr., near the Michigan line, July 7th, 1879, occurred last Wednesday. Elder Preston, Pastor of the Fremont M.E. Church officiated, and the remains were laid to rest in the Fremont Cemetery. His age was 82 years, 9 months and 20 days. The subject of this brief sketch was born in Cumberland County, PA, September 17, 1795. He came to Indiana in 1856, settling on and clearing the farm one mile north of the village of Fremont, now owned by Jacob Shank. For several years he alternately made his home with his sons, Frederick and John, whom, we believe both reside near the Michigan line and are well-to-do farmers, and on whom the marks of father time are already plainly visible. Uncle John was always rugged and hearty, very seldom complained of being ill and was formerly a member of the Lutheran Church.

Censuses for 1850 and 1860 are clearly the same family and none of those family members are found in the 1870 census. It is not apparent which or if either of these censuses for for David Miller, son of John Miller.
