Son
of John Welsh Merrifield and Lauretta Horne, he
was named for his grand uncle, William Jefferson
Merrifield, who died in the Texas War of Independence
at Goliad in 1836.
The Texas land grant his grand uncle received
was given to Alexander Merrifield who in turn
gave it to John A. Merrifield.
