BIRTH-SPOUSE-CHILDREN-DEATH: "Merrifield Family Quarterly", Vol. IV, No. 3, August 1987, M-22, pages 53, 69, 180, 187 and 188.
NOTE: James was born 1774, Booth's Creek, Marion, WV; m. 1800. He resided in Virginia, Ohio and IL.
He was living in Xenia, Greene Co., OH in 1807 and Empire Twp., McLean Co., IL in 1830. He is buried in Old Oak Grove Cemetery. Much of the information was prepared by Wayne C. Hart. Similar vital information from Dave Distler, except for death date, which Distler gave as 1850.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: From the above source, page 53 "Portrait and Biographical Album of McLean Co., IL", pub. 1887:
James, Hannah and their family of nine children came to IL in the fall of 1829, traveling with "a four-horse team, and no particular trouble except with the green-head flies, which bit the horses and made them nearly crazy. They first stopped at Cheney's Grove, but stayed during the first winter over on Kickapoo, about ten miles west of Leroy. In the spring Mr. Merrifield (James), Sr., took a claim on the east side of Buckle's Grove, and moved there April 2, 1830. It was the business of Otho Merrifield and his brother to take care of the stock, and when they had a little extra time they went on a deer or wolf chase." "He was elected to the first grand jury in McLean Co., Il in 1834. He was appointed Supervisor of Road District No. 4. He was appointed Trustee of school lands in Twp 22N, Range 4E."
MARRIAGE: Pam Musselman Mauer, agawela@tstar.net, wrote on 25 June 2000:
"I do have proof from me to James & Hanna(h). Their marriage certificate spells their names as James Merifield & Hannah Hains."

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS DERIVED FROM THE GEDCOM OF JAN GESAS HORNICK UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED:
MARRIAGE:
Juliet aka Julia Merrifield married John Reed 6 May 1824. He died in IL.
NOTES: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jul 2007]
Pam Musselman Mauer sent me via email a descendant register for William Reed whose son was John Reed. John had a second wife, Charity Webb. I have found John Reed with wife Charity and 9 children in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Henderson, IL. The 2 oldest children, Samuel and Benjamin, are age 20 and 18 respectively. Wife, Charity, is indexed as 33 years of age and while it is possible she gave birth at the age 13, it is also possible at least these 2 children are those of Juliet Merrifield.
Further investigation has revealed that William, Samuel and James are indeed the children of Juliet aka Julia Merrifield Reed and that she had 10 children in all. Corroboration of this is recorded in a biography for son, William Jefferson Reed, wherein it recounts father, John Reed's, marriages to Juliet aka Julia Merrifield and Charity Webb, and the children of both unions.

Reed, a retired farmer, now living on Section 26, Rozetta Township, Henderson County, Illinois claims Kentucky as the State of his nativity. He was born in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, on the 17th of March, 1829, and is a son of John and Julia (Merrifield) Reed. The father was a native of Massachusetts, and in an early day went South. He was twice married, and by the first union had the following children: Rachel, Elizabeth, Amanda, William J., and James, Milton, George and Jane, who are deceased. By his second marriage seven children were born, namely: Emily, John, Anthony, Asel, Calista, Annie and Joseph.
The subject of this skitch spent his early boyhood days on his father's farm in Kentucky, and attended the subscription schools, which were held in a log schoolhouse, to which he had to walk a distance of two miles. His privileges in that direction were quite limited, and he is practically self-educated. When a youth of twelve summers, he came to Illinois with his parents, the journey being made by team. From the Government his father secured the farm on which William is now living. Here he grew to manhood, his time being largely passed in farm work. On attaining his majority, he started out in life for himself, and for a short time worked as a farm hand by the month. He then began improving an eighty-acre plot of wild prairie land, and for twenty years lived upon that farm, making it one of the valuable and desirable places in the neighborhood. At length, however, he returned to the old homestead, where he has one hundred and forty-four acres. This is under a high state of cultivation, and well improved with all modern accessories and conveniences. All of the buildings upon the place stand as monuments to his thrift and enterprise, for they were placed there through his own efforts. Of late years he has lived a retired life, enjoying the rest which he has so truly earned and richly deserves.
Mrs. Reed bore the maiden name of Sarah E. Davis, and was a daughter of William and Elizabeth (Sykes) Davis. their marriage was celebrated on the 11th of August, 1854, and by their union were born six children, but three are now deceased. Henry died in infancy; Mary died February 28, 1887; Francis died in infancy; Alice is the wife of Edward Salter, of Stronghurst; Delia is the wife of Samuel Elwell, a Methodist preacher, now living in Washington Kan.; and Eliza is the wife of James Hayes, and resides on the old homestead. In his political views, Mr. Reed was formerly a Republican, but on account of the strong temperance principles which he entertains, he has of late years supported the Prohibition party. He has served as Road Commissioner and School Director, but has preferred to give his time and attention to business dealings rather than to politics. He and his wife both hold membership with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and take an active part in its work and upbuilding. During their long residence in the county they have always been numbered among its best citizens, and their true worth has won them many warm friends.
SARAH ELIZABETH DAVIS 1 was born on 29 Jan 1837. She died on 12 Jan 1903 in Henderson Co., IL. She married WILLIAM JEFFERSON REED on 11 Aug 1854. SARAH was buried in Reed Cemetery, Henderson Co., IL.

Indexing of children's name is confused, one children indexed as Fanny, another as Fairie. Judging by their ages, I am guessing that Fanny A. is Alice and Fairie E. is Mary. From other data, Samuel would've been 5 in 1860 but is recorded as 1.

MRS. J.H. WOODS- Mrs. James H. Woods died at the family residence at 833 East Broadway on September 3, 1898, the immediate cause of her death being given as heart trouble, though she had been ill for a couple of weeks with dysentery. Funeral services were held at her home and conducted by Dr. T. H. Hanna and the Rev. J. R. Jamieson.
Mrs. Woods, daughter of John and Juliet Reed, was born October 12, 1826,in Hardin County, Kentucky. In the spring of 1840 she came with her parents to Henderson County and on November 1, 1849, she married James H. Woods. Until the spring of 1894 they resided in the Reed neighborhood in Henderson county, then they came to Monmouth and built the fine home in which they lived at the time of her death.
They had 10 children living at the time of her death, and all but one were present for her funeral. The 10 children were: Mrs. S.H. Prather of Tarkio, Mo.; Mrs. A.C.(Clara E.) Pollard, Mitchell, S.D.; J.L., David M., and Mrs. J. A. (Eva) Campbell, Chicago; Samuel P., Kansas City; Misses Alice, Ida and Omah and William H., of Monmouth. Mrs. Pollard was the one unable to attend the funeral.
They had the following children:
F i CLARA E. WOODS was born after 16 Aug 1850 in Henderson Co.,IL. She died 1 in 1885/1954 in Mitchell, So. Dakota.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jul 2007]
Did not find this child recorded in any censuses with James H. and Elizabeth Reed Woods, though she appears to have been referenced in the obituary for Elizabeth Woods. However, the obituary says Elizabeth had 10 children and if Clara E. is included then there would have been 11 children. I suspect that this child is actually one of the others but her given name has been confused.F ii ELIZABETH ANN WOODS was born about 1851 in Henderson Co.,IL.

BIOGRAPHY: [Article about Margaret Angeline Reed]:
Margaret Angeline Hogue, daughter of S.L. and Mary Hogue, was born March 28, 1831 at Harmony, Clay County, Indiana. The following year the family moved to Illinois and settled in Warren county, and in 1840 the father was elected sheriff. He was the first sheriff of Warren county, after the lower part was formed into Henderson county.
She was the oldest daughter in the family of six children and after her father's death, helped in the support of the family. Though brought up in the Seceder church she was not a church member until after her marriage, when she joined the M. E. church with her husband, James Reed to whom she was married April 11, 1850, the Rev. McDowal performing the ceremony. The bride and groom settled nine miles west of Monmouth on what is now called the Hulick farm.
In April 1865, they moved to what is now the Elias Beal place and on December 9, 1864. The husband died, leaving her with seven children, the youngest dying a month later. The mother continued to live on the farm the children attending Cedar Ridge school. In addition to caring for her own children, six nephews and nieces left motherless had a place in her home from time to time and attended school. Hers was indeed a busy useful life in the home, but her interests did not stop there, for it was a settled custom that the entire household attend Sunday school and preaching at Reed's church regularly. In her home the early Methodist preacher was ever a welcome guest and around the fireside many thrilling experiences of pioneer days weretold. After the three oldest children were married she moved to Monmouth March 1st, 1884, and transferred her membership from Reed's church to Monmouth First M. E. church and for 32 years was a consistent member.
Being clever with her needle she became active in the Aid society andwas ever ready to lend a hand at quilting and tying comforts, the proceeds gong to the upkeep of the church. By their untiring efforts, these women, banded together for services and often meeting two days each week showed their devotion to the church and their desire to help in its upbuilding. The success of this little enterprise attracted attention and the Aid society was called their "Club". The spirit of earnestness and true devotion made its own atmosphere and was so pervasive that theircomversation was along spiritual lines.
She highly prized her church privileges and lived to see her children professed Christians. She attended service the last Sunday before her final illness, which lasted only one week. On Wednesday morning at 6 o'clock, September 13th, 1916, "Aunt Angeline," as she was called, passed peacefully away.
Of the seven children five are still living: Mary Juliet Findley, Arroyo Grande, Calif.; Samuel P. Reed, Molina, Colorado; George W. Reed, Aledo, Illinois; Elizabeth J. Steele, Nashville, Tennessee; Leona Frances McClung, Monmouth, Illinois. Ella Amelia Reed dies June 9, 1901, and Elvira Angeline Reed dies January 6, 1865.
The deceased was grandmother to 19 grandchildren and great-grandmotherto 15 great-grandchildren. Her brothers and sisters have all passed away excepting the youngest brother, Samuel Hogue, of Spring Hill, Kansas.E.J.S.
They had the following children:
F i MARY JULIET REED was born on 15 Mar 1851 in Kirkwood, Warren Co., IL . She died on 13 Jun 1935 in Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo Co., CA.

SPOUSE-CHILDREN:
Matilda Merrifield married George Lawson Rogers 3 Nov 1834 in Hardin Co., KY. George was born 30 Apr 1793.
They had the following children:
1. Cynthia Rogers, b. 9 Oct 1830 in KY
2. Mary J. Rogers, b. aft 1834
3. Martha Rogers, b. aft 1834
4. John W. Rogers, b. aft 1834
5. Samuel Jefferson Rogers, aft 1834
6. Amanda Rogers, b. aft 1834CONFLICT RESOLUTION: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2009]
Based on family database of Douglas Stewart Moore (3rd great-grandson of Matilda Merrifield and George Rogers) Matilda married George Rogers in 1824 nor 1834 and Mary J. Rogers was born in 1825. Also provided correct birthdates of the children.
CONFLICTS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jul 2007]
Based on the 1850 census, daughter, Mary J. Rogers, was 22 years old placing her year of birth at 1828. This brings into question the year Matilda Merrifield married George Rogers since Mary's birth pre-dates their marriage by 6 years.
Also, in this 1850 census, George has remarried and there are 3 young children in the household, Joseph H. age 3, Sarah E. age 1 and R.C., age 6 mos. There is no Amanda Rogers in this census indicating that either she had not survived or that she was born before Mary and had married.
They had the following children:
