Altra Payton, of Brighton, Colorado, passed away on April 8, 2007 at Brighton Care Center. She was born May 23, 1916 in Danburry, Nebraska to Lawrence and Margaret (Poehlman) Abbott. She married George Payton on September 1, 1936. They lived in central Nebraska before spending a short time in Idaho and Oregon. They moved to Brighton in 1989 to be near their daughter.
She worked many different jobs on the farm to help her parents and also helped with her seven siblings. She worked at a restaurant, dry cleaners and had her own mending and alterations business as well as managing apartments. Her last job was at the Adams County Detention Center mending inmates clothing. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brighton and all branches of the Rebecca Lodge.
Altra loved to fish, camp and play cards, especially with her grandchildren and great-granchildren.
Survivors include sons, Dean (Jean) Payton of Thomson, Georgia, and Lawrence (Kathleen) Payton of Ocklawaha, Florida; daughter Dorothy (Jack) King of Brighton, CO; brothers, Oren Abbott of Palmer, NE and Clarence Abbott of Dallas, TX; sister, Viola Bevard of Bayard, NE; brother-in-law, Donald Payton of Childress, TX; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001; one grandson, her parents and 6 brothers.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 10, 2007 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesay, April 10, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Tabor-Rice Funeral Home, Brighton, CO.

"Back in the 1850's the Tucker's-Greenup and Elizabeth were slave owners. They owned 5 slaves (1850 federal slave schedule - Benton Co. MO) one was a 28 yr old female and the other 4 were mulatto children ages 9, 6, 4 and 2; 3 female and 1 male...Since Greenup was a slave owner they moved to Nevada before March 21, 1852 because that is the date he died in Nevada aged 56 years...He is buried in Balltown Cemetery in Nevada next to his wife Elizabeth (Woodson) Tucker who died May 21, 1873 aged 73 yrs, 7 mos, 11 days. That would make her birth date Oct.10, 1800. There is a will on file in Vernon Co. for the Tucker's. I found a marriage between Greenup Tucker and Elizabeth Woodson in Henry Co. KY April 3, 1821." Cindy wrote later 5 May 2003: "Little Osage Township is an enumeration distict in Nevada, Vernon Co., MO. It lays just outside of Nevada...Greenup, Sr. apparently died at home there in Nevada."

Preston Walker Tucke, son of Greenup and Elizabeth Woodson Tucker. Elizabeth is of the Virginia First Families Woodsons. Preston is my 2nd G.Grandfather and grandson of George and Mary Lee Merrifield Tucker.
He was born 25 Sep 1825 in Henry Co., KY and died 25 Feb 1897. Buried Cole Camp Cemetery, Cole Camp, Benton Co., MO. Sgt. Benton Co. Home Guards, taken Prisoner at Battle of Cole Camp. Re-enlisted 90 day’s later, Missouri State Militia 7th Cavalry mustered out in 1865. (Union Army).
Four of Preston’s Brothers fought for the Confederacy. Two of them lost their lives and one was severely wounded.

First wife was Martha J. Nichols, older sister of Elmina. Martha was born abt 1835. In Sep 1851, a daughter, Samantha, was born to them. She died the same day and Martha died the following day.
Preston married Elmina 3 Aug 1852 in Henry Co., MO. They probably eloped as Henry County is over 50 miles from Benton Co., a long way in those days.
Lastly, Preston married Elizabeth A. Proctor 30 Jul 1875 in Benton Co. 1880 census lists a daughter, Edna, age 4 months. When Preston married Elizabeth, she was over 25 years younger than him. It is said that she left Preston since he was a widower ahd she inherited 3 or more children and ended up in California.

S.W. TUCKER DEAD
Ed Tucker received a telegram last Monday informing him of the death of his brother, Shaderick W. in Los Angeles, California last Sunday.
"Shade" as he was familiarly known here, was born in this county Nov. 4, 1860, being aged 44 yers and 7 months at the time of his death. For several years past he has been located at Columbus, Kansas being foreman of a lumber company there. Last January he had an attack of la'grippe but as he though fully recovered, and returned to his work, but suffered a relapse. The disease settled in his throat and lungs.
He went to California in March thinking the change in climate would be beneficial but grew worse, the disease developing into quick consumption. According to the message the funeral occurred Tuesday from teh home of his brother, Asa, who resides in Los Angeles.F v EMMA TUCKER 1, 2, 3 was born in 1865 in Cole Camp, Benton Co., MO. Greenup Albert Tucker, aka Al, son of Preston Walker and Great Grandson of George and Mary Lee Merrifield Tucker. Born 29 Aug. 1855 Cole Camp, Benton CO, MO. Died 7 Nov. 1933. Buried Cole Camp Cemetery aka Parks Cemetery. Self taught veterinarian and practiced that trade. United States Marshall and Cole Camp Town Marshall in later years. Many documented newspaper accounts of bravery, fisticuffs, and gunplay thru out his service as a lawman. Referred to as a “Notorious Fighter” in many articles and as a “Premier Grappler”. He was “gored” by a young bull in his later years and complications from this incident eventually took his life.

Preston Walker Tucke, son of Greenup and Elizabeth Woodson Tucker. Elizabeth is of the Virginia First Families Woodsons. Preston is my 2nd G.Grandfather and grandson of George and Mary Lee Merrifield Tucker.
He was born 25 Sep 1825 in Henry Co., KY and died 25 Feb 1897. Buried Cole Camp Cemetery, Cole Camp, Benton Co., MO. Sgt. Benton Co. Home Guards, taken Prisoner at Battle of Cole Camp. Re-enlisted 90 day’s later, Missouri State Militia 7th Cavalry mustered out in 1865. (Union Army).
Four of Preston’s Brothers fought for the Confederacy. Two of them lost their lives and one was severely wounded.

First wife was Martha J. Nichols, older sister of Elmina. Martha was born abt 1835. In Sep 1851, a daughter, Samantha, was born to them. She died the same day and Martha died the following day.
Preston married Elmina 3 Aug 1852 in Henry Co., MO. They probably eloped as Henry County is over 50 miles from Benton Co., a long way in those days.
Lastly, Preston married Elizabeth A. Proctor 30 Jul 1875 in Benton Co. 1880 census lists a daughter, Edna, age 4 months. When Preston married Elizabeth, she was over 25 years younger than him. It is said that she left Preston since he was a widower ahd she inherited 3 or more children and ended up in California.

Preston Walker Tucke, son of Greenup and Elizabeth Woodson Tucker. Elizabeth is of the Virginia First Families Woodsons. Preston is my 2nd G.Grandfather and grandson of George and Mary Lee Merrifield Tucker.
He was born 25 Sep 1825 in Henry Co., KY and died 25 Feb 1897. Buried Cole Camp Cemetery, Cole Camp, Benton Co., MO. Sgt. Benton Co. Home Guards, taken Prisoner at Battle of Cole Camp. Re-enlisted 90 day’s later, Missouri State Militia 7th Cavalry mustered out in 1865. (Union Army).
Four of Preston’s Brothers fought for the Confederacy. Two of them lost their lives and one was severely wounded.

First wife was Martha J. Nichols, older sister of Elmina. Martha was born abt 1835. In Sep 1851, a daughter, Samantha, was born to them. She died the same day and Martha died the following day.
Preston married Elmina 3 Aug 1852 in Henry Co., MO. They probably eloped as Henry County is over 50 miles from Benton Co., a long way in those days.
Lastly, Preston married Elizabeth A. Proctor 30 Jul 1875 in Benton Co. 1880 census lists a daughter, Edna, age 4 months. When Preston married Elizabeth, she was over 25 years younger than him. It is said that she left Preston since he was a widower ahd she inherited 3 or more children and ended up in California.
