FIELDING "COLONEL" MERRIFIELD [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 was born on 7 Dec 1794 in KY. He died on 13 Aug 1872 in Bloomfield, Nelson Co., KY. He was buried in Old Bloomfield Cemetery, Nelson Co., KY. He married ABIGAIL "ABBY" BEMISS on 18 Dec 1822.

RESEARCH NOTES OF DOUGLAS STEWART MOORE, JAN 2009:

Dr. Alexander Hamilton Merrifield wrote: "My father, Fielding Merrifield, came to Nelson Co. in the year 1821; married Miss Abigail Bemiss and settled on the farm now owned by Mr. Charles Dawson (on the road to Chaplin). The farm contained about 175 acres for which he paid ten dollers per acre. He commenced housekeeping in a log hosue. He lived in this house until the year 1825 when he built a brick house that stands there now (1906)." Alexander continued: "As I have stated before, I was born in 1931. The cholera year was 1832. I was just two years and three months gold when my father was attacked with cholera. I was sitting on his lap at the time. I also recollect of them sending for Dr. Merrifield and seeing him come into the room. My father had a slight attack and soon recovered."

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS DERIVED FROM THE GEDCOM OF JAN GESAS HORNICK UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED:

SPOUSE-CHILDREN:

Colonel Fielding Merrifield married Abigail "Abby" Bemiss 18 Dec 1822. She was born 25 Apr 1801 in Bloomfield, Nelson Co., KY.

Children of Fielding & Abigail Merrifield:

i. Daniel Boone Merrifield
ii. Erasmus Darwin Merrifield
iii. Bemiss Merrifield
iv. Fielding Merrifield
v. Alexander Hamilton Merrifield

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2005]

Both the 1860 & 1870 censuses record Abigail as born in New York. Also have found a Jefferson in the 1860 census. Unclear if this is the same child as "Bemiss" Merrifield. An 1880 census places Alexander Hamilton Merrifield's year of birth about 1831, and Daniel Boone Merrifield's year of birth about 1840. I did not find Darwin in an 1880 census, or Jefferson.

Is it possible that Jefferson is not Fielding Merrifield's son but that of Fielding's brother, William Jefferson Merrifield who died in 1836?

There are 2 records on the familysearch.org site for Jefferson Merrifield. One has him born 1830 in Harding, KY as the son of William Jefferson Merrifield and Sarah Welsh. There is no source listed.

The second has a Jefferson Merrifield, born about 1830 in Harding, KY as son of John M. "Jack" Merrifield and Sarah Welsh. The submitter is Frederick E. & Lynell B. Moss of Plano, TX.

Jan Hornick's database has William Jefferson Merrifield dying in Goliad, TX.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2005]

Nancy is the wife of Boone Merrifield. An 1880 census confirms this and that Abigail, age 3, and Thomas, age 7 months, are their children.

It is unclear whose children the others are. Fielding, at age 8, could not be the child of Fielding and Abigail and it is unlikely the others are their children as well. Possibly they are grandchildren and/or the children of one of his siblings.

FURTHER NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2005]

I have also found Samuel, Julia, Vernon & Fielding in the household of a Walter Re____?, a farmer, also in Bloomfield. Samuel, age 15, is recorded with an occuation of "working on farm." Their ages are all off by a year or two.

RESEARCH NOTES OF DOUGLAS STEWART MOORE, JAN 2009:

Obituary of Dr. Alexander Hamilton Merrifield:

In Memory of Dr. Merrifield, Kentucky Standard, 26 Feb 1914

"Dr. Alexander Hamilton Merrifield was born on a farm near Bloomfield on May 21, 1832. As a young man be became attracted to the profession of medicine and accordingly entered the medical department of the University of Louisville from which he graduated about the year 1851 (Dr. A.H.M. wrote that he began his study of medicine in the spring of 1851 under his uncle Dr. Samuel Boone Merrifield and Dr. Joshua Gore, who were then partners,) After his graduation he went to Illinois where he practiced his craft for four years. Then while making a visit to his relatives in Nelson County, he fell victim to the charms of Miss Anna Amanda Rogers ( his first cousin) the daughter of Rev. George Lawson Rogers for many years an honored local preacher of the Kentucky Conference. He was married to MIss Robers on August 16th, 1859... the young married couple settled on a farm two miles south east of Bloomfield where his widow still resides."

In describing the deplorable conditions of the South following the Civil War, Dr. A.H. Merrifield wrote: "It now looked very discouraging to a farmer in the once slave holding states; their labor system gone; and everything else in a disorganized state. I began to wish that I had never seen a farm. I was young then and full of vim and energy, and set a determination to fight the battle through, negro or no negro. My wife had never cooked a meal in her life; experience, though, is the best teacher in the world, so we buckled down to it, and made money and soon got out of debt. The farm on which I settled was known as the Tommy Stone farm;...The farm when my father bought it belong to the late Ellis and Green Duncan...I made money then -- I just had to make it. I raised five daughters and one son and educated then at Millersburg, Glasgow and Science Hill. I went to it late and early through rain, sunshine, snow and sleet, I was determined to make farming a success as I had sacrificed my profession. [5 Apr 1906]

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2005]

Possibility that this is Alexander Hamilton Merrifield, son of Fielding Merrifield, is based upon his age which correlates to the 1880 census below wherein he is recorded as 49. However, the conflict arises from the recorded occupation of physician whereas in the 1870 and 1880 his recorded occupation is Farmer. Further conflict, his wife's name is recorded as Amanda not Annie or Anna as in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2005]

I have found a census for Dr. Alex Merrifield, age 79, in this 1910 census. His wife's name is recorded what looks to be Manda, married 50 years with 6 children born & 6 surviving. The census image is very hard to read and 2 daughters are also recorded. Their names appear to be Maymrie and possibly Jenner which could be Mary J. and Jennie B., however, their ages are recorded as 27 and 30 respectively. Based on the 1880 census, Mary J. would've been age 33 in 1910 and Jennie B., age 36.

While I think that this Alex Merrifield and the Aleck Merrifield in the 1860 census are one and the same, I am skeptical that they are the same Alex Merrifield recorded in the 1870 or the A.H. Merrifield recorded in the 1880 census both of whom have the recorded occupation of farmer and wife named Annie/Anna.
