Despite the difference in age and birthplace, I think it is highly likely this is Essel M. Wright, son of Susannah Merrifield and Fielding Wright, chiefly because his daughter's name is "Annis." This is the name of Essel Wright's twin sister, Annis Wright.

According to Harriet Jane Malson, Essel was first married to a "Sara." In this census, the wife's name is recorded as "Clara" which I believe to either be a mistake on the part of the enumerator or Harriet's translation of her husband (my first cousin), John R. Malson, handwritten notes was mistaken.
If I can find a 1920 and 1930 census for Essel this may help to clear up this confusion. And, I will also check with Harriet.

William Francis Conoway, retired South Penn Oil Co. employee, at the age of after 39 years of continuous service. He leased the large I. D. Morgan farm and became sucessful in cattle and general farming. While searching for a lost calf in the hills, he suffered a fatal heart attack and was found by a South Penn pumper shortly after the attack. He was prominent in I.O.O.F. activities and an active member of the Democratic party. He leaves surviving, his widow, Mrs. Essie Merrifield Conoway; three sons, Daniel, John, and Bruce; four daughters, Alice Conoway, Mrs. Edith McIntyre, Mrs. Belle Hayes and Kathleen Conoway at home. Services were held at the family residence on Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. J.B. Rupert, of the Smithfield M.E. Church. John William Conaway, 69, of Route 1, Buckhannon, formerly of Smithfield, Wetzel Co., died Thursday, August 14, 1975 at home. He was a retired employee of the State Road Commission and a member of the Heaston United Methodist Church of Hodgesville.
Surviving are his widow, Ruth Moore Comaway, two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Janiszewski of West Branch, Michigan and Mrs. Janice Cardwell of Memphis, Tennessee; a brother, Bruce Conaway of East Liverpool, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Belle Riddle of Dallas, Texas and Mrs. Kathleen Merrifield of Sardis, Ohio.
Friends were received at the Poling St. Clair Funeral Home in Buckhannon. Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Heaston United Methodist Church. Interment in Heavner Cemetery, Buckhannon, WV.F iii ALICE CONAWAY 1, 2, 3, 4 was born about 1910 in Wetzel Co., WV. She died in Jan 1969.

1900 Census for Grant District, Wetzel Co., WV records Mary J. Maryfield as age 16, born Jul 1883. She is also recorded in another 1900 census where she is 15 (see below). The 1910 records her as age 25. In 1920, she is recorded age 36, a widow and living with her mother (SEE NOTES OF MOTHER, BELINDA CAROLINE FLOYD). Given this, I find it highly UNLIKELY, Mary Jane Merrifield was born in 1876.

Also for 1900, SEE NOTES OF FATHER, JOHN MARTIN VAN BUREN MERRIFIELD. Mary J. Maryfield is also recorded in her father's household in Grant, Wetzel Co., WV. Her age in that census is 16. Her birth was recorded as July 1883. It is likely that her employers incorrectly reported her year of birth in the above census.

Based on the database provided to me by David C. Merrifield, Mary Jane had a son, Harrison. In this database, he is given the Phillips surname.
However, Harrison is recorded as the grandson of John Martin Van Buren Merrifield in the 1910 census where he is 2 years old making his year of birth1908 (4 years before Mary Jane is to have married John Wesley Phillips. Harrison is also recorded with the Merrifield surname.
Mary Jane is recorded in the same census in the same household as 25 and single, so possibly Harrison was born out-of-wedlock. Possibly he was later adopted by Mary Jane's husband, John Wesley Phillips.
Conflict to this assumption, however, arises from the 1920 census, werein Harrison is again recorded as Harrison Merrifield at age 12. Mary Jane is recorded with the Merrifield surname and a widow. Question is whether or not this was an error on the part of the enumerator, and/or whether or not Harrison was actually adopted or Mary Jane had him later assume the Phillips surname.
