Possibly in the same census is son John A . Merrifield (who fits the age range). There is also a Samuel Merrifield in the same census but I cannot connect him via the age range of 20 to 30 to Alexander's son, Samuel, who would've been 52 years old at that time.
THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS DERIVED FROM THE GEDCOM OF JAN GESAS HORNICK UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED. I HAVE NOT CONFIRMED OR DISCOUNTED HER SOURCES AND IT HAS BEEN ACCEPTED ON FAITH.
PARENTAGE-CONFLICTS: [LeAnn McRoberts]
Ancestral File of JOHN R. MALSON and AFN file of Janet Gesas Hornick records birthdate as abt 1761, Janet Hornick believes ALEXANDER may actually be the son of THOMAS MERRIFIELD and not SAMUEL Sr.
Janet says MERRIFIELD researcher, Mary Prescott Yoder, wrote to her Nov. 17, 2000 saying she had indications that ALEXANDER was the son of THOMAS, not of SAMUEL I. Mary writes:
"I don't think that ALEXANDER (m Rachael Boone) was the s/o SAMUEL I & MARY. Simply because it is highly unlikely. I have a birth date of MAY 1-6, 1765 for ALEXANDER (have both dates in my file & don't have cem recds of Nelson Co to know which one is right)...[In] the 1785 tithables of Nelson Co - ALEXANDER does not pay a tithe - so he is under 21 in 1785 (20 yrs old & married in 1787).
"I honestly believe that ALEXANDER was the s/o THOMAS & not SAMUEL I. Too much of a gap between ALEXANDER's birth date & SAMUEL I's. BUT IF ALEXANDER is the s/o THOMAS- how about the mg records in Jefferson & Nelson Cos that is too early to be children of ALEXANDER and Rachael? There a very close relationship between ALEXANDER & THOMAS. Both are supposedly in Jefferson Co 1789, says Gary Hodge, a MERRIFIELD researcher...I lack these records to know for sure one way or the other."
IGI Individual file submitted by Jacqueline Buresh lists him also as son of SAMUEL, born Apr 4, 1765 [LeANN McROBERTS, Nov. 2003]..

===================NAME-CONFLICT-QUESTION:
Mary Yoder, July 1999, questions the middle name of "Hamilton". She has not found any documentation in land or other records that support this. In an e-mail 15 Jan 2000, mayoder@davesworld.net, Mary wrote:
"Early researchers say that ALEXANDER's name was ALEXANDER HAMILTON MERRIFIELD. I have yet to see a record where Hamilton is used as a middle name. He is listed simply as ALEXANDER. Dr. ALEXANDER HAMILTON MERRIFIELD was the s/o of FIELDING & ABIGAIL BEMISS MERRIFIELD - so that is where the ALEXANDER HAMILTON comes in."
RELATIONSHIPS-CONFLICTS-ORIGIN:
Information from Mary Yoder, 15 Jan 2000 via e-mail, mayoder @davesworld.net:
"We now know that the Portage Co, OH MERRIFIELDs were from Mass not Va. Buried in Portage Co is SAMUEL & Sarah MERRIFIELD, THOMAS & Eunice (Wathen) MERRIFIELD (m in Mass); and JOHN MERRIFIELD.
These are the supposed brothers of ALEXANDER that early researchers give - all sons of SAMUEL I & MARY E. MERRIFIELD/ MARYFIELD/MERRYFIELD who sold land to their son SAMUEL II in 1765 Frederick Co, Va.(lots of records from there) giving ch of SAMUEL, THOMAS, JOHN, RICHARD, ALEXANDER, MARY, ELIZABETH, DINAH/DINNA, and RACHEL.
ALEXANDER b Apr 1765; the land record is dated April 1765- how could he be a brother and still listed in the land record?? SAMUEL is b ca 1727 & MARY b the same ca. It is a mystery to me!!! No trace of this ALEXANDER (of the land record) has been found yet.
The son RICHARD m PHOEBE TUCKER and stayed in VA. SAMUEL, THOMAS, JOHN all served in Lord Dunsmore's war- was at Ft. Pitt when paid off. THOMAS MINNIFIELD (MERRIFIELD??) was with George Rogers Clark on his IL Campaign (as was a JAMES MERRIFIELD- from the index of the Ill SAR index of the Clark papers in the Newberry Lib in Chicago- index is on line). Listed in the same index is Paul Matthews (f/o Nelly Matthews who m THOMAS MERRIFIELD Feb 12, 1795 Nelson Co, Ky- is this THOMAS Jr??).
Also listed is Michael Hoofnogle/Hoognagle /Hoofnaigle (did his widow Jennie marry THOMAS MERRIFIELD (SR) Jun 20, 1796 Nelson Co, Ky?). We know that all of the Men: THOMAS MERRIFIELD, Paul Matthews & Michael Hoofnogle was all b 174?-175?. The only identified child of THOMAS was POLLY MERRIFIELD who married George Howard 1798 Nelson Co (m record says d/o THOMAS). Don't know the parents of George (but my branch has connections with the Howard family around 1900 & later).
Then a THOMAS MERRIFIELD m Mariah Leshorn Aug 23, 1806 Williamson Co, TN (she appears as Maria MERRIFIELD on a m. record in Hardin Co--If she is the same). THOMAS is 1825 Tax list of Hardin Co--leading me to believe that he is the son of ALEXANDER & RACHEL (this would explain why MATILDA MERRIFIELD (later married George Lawson Rogers in Hardin Co with surety ALEXANDER- who's husband George with children is listed in the estate papers of ALEXANDER in 1847 as descendants--MATILDA was bound out in Hardin Co as "a poor child of the county").
Bound out also was WARREN MERRYFIELD (who md Susan Smith Mar 18, 1845 Bullitt Co) as "a poor chld of the county"- he isn't listed in the estate records of ALEXANDER. John Brockworth Summers also sued for a share of ALEXANDER's estate (he m a d/o of ALEXANDER & RACHEL who was dead- John m #2 in Hardin Co & ended up in Bullitt Co along with George L. Rogers). Lemuel Smith m Cynthia MERRIFIELD, d/o ALEXANDER & Rachel; but is not listed in estate records because they have gone to IL, along with Juliet MERRIFIELD who m Jonn Reed/Read. A dau m Cadwallader Wallace Moore & is in Washington Co, Ky (where they both died- now have lineage from them- Moores married in Nelson Co with surety Dr. SAMUEL B. MERRIFIELD)."
SECOND MARRIAGE: Mary Yoder sent the following September 2000:
On 17 Nov 2000, Mary also wrote: "ALEXANDER & RACHEL was in Shelby Co until around 1805 (when SAMUEL BOONE Jr died-RACHEL's father). Then have him in 1806 in Washington Co Tn; can't find him until ca 1809/1810 when he is in Hardin Co.
RESIDENCES:
Mary Yoder wrote on July 3, 2003:
"Do know that ALEXANDER & THOMAS flips in and out of the tithables of Nelson Co (which I put together & put on the Nelson Co, Ky web site for all to search).
"Know they were in Jefferson Co, Ky the 1789-ish-1790-ish. Then Shelby Co was formed in 1793 from Jefferson & ??. Shelby Co is where the Boone Family was located. There is a Boone Fort at Shelbyville. Shelby Co is where I found REBECCA MERRIFIELD (sic) listed in the special 1795 State Census. Hoping to get ahold of the whole census and check it out for the others (Boones, etc)."

SOURCE: The following information comes courtesy of Kathy Fetty Ramsay, July 2004.
My grandmother, Hazel Jeanette Merrifield, born 14 June 1896 in Marion Co., West Virginia, died in October 1979 and is buried in the Mt. Harmony Church Cemetery beside her sister, Bertha.
She married Oliver Fetty (1920 census Marion Co.) after Oliver's first wife, on her death bed, asked my grandmother to marry Oliver to care for her small children. Those children were Gilbert (16), Willie (11), and Fay (7) as recorded in the Marion Co. 1920 census.
My dad was recorded as 2 years 9 months by the same census. However, my dad never thought that Oliver Fetty was his real father. It was not until my grandmother's death in 1979 that the stepbrothers (or half brothers) emerged. I think she told me about them once, but only in passing, and I know she didn't keep regular communication with them. Neither did my father, until after my grandmother's death.
SIBLINGS:
I remember Clate and Amber and I remember Iva and Will. I spoke with my mother trying to jog her memory about those earlier years. She said that the Merrifields were not kind to my grandmother because of my father's birth.
When my mother and father married in 1949 they sent for her to come to Charleston to live with them. Mom relayed that my grandmother came to Charleston with only a few house dresses and no teeth. My father then bought both my grandmothers' their teeth the following Christmas. It must have been a really hard life for her.
Iva Belle Merrifield married Will Radcliffe and resided in Fairmont until their deaths. I don't remember any children.
Clate I. Merrifield married Amber ? and resided in Fairmont until their deaths. There were two sons, Jimmy, who resided in Fairmont in 1979 and Ivan, whereabouts unknown. There were two daughters, Mary Frances Manley, who resided on Park Drive in Fairmont and Marguarite, whereabouts unknown. (I remember Jimmy at my grandmother's funeral in Fairmont.)
I have a note indicating that there is a Bobby Merrifield in California who is the son of Ivan and the grandson of Clate.
Marie Merrifield married Joseph Martin and resided in Charleston WV until her death in 1987. They had one son, Bill, who resided in Sebring Florida, and one daughter, Jane Croy, who resided in Sebastian Florida. (I grew up with Jane and Bill.)
My grandmother's youngest sister, Marie, and her husband Joe Martin, moved from Little Rock, Arkansas to Charleston just about the time I was born. Dad told Joe that the Charleston Newspaper was hiring and Joe got a job.

ROBERT MERRIFIELD FETTY [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4 was born on 24 May 1917 in WV. He died on 26 Dec 1997 in Charleston, Kanawha Co., WV. He married LOIS WILSON in 1949. The marriage ended in divorce. ROBERT was employed as My dad was a pressman at the same newspaper all of his life..
SOURCE: The following information comes courtesy of Kathy Fetty Ramsay, July 2004.
The story of my dad's birth was relayed to me by my mother and she was not privileged to much information.
My grandmother had my dad out of wedlock in 1917 and was disowned by her family. She had another sister that bore a child out of wedlock and they were a comfort to each other.
As the story goes, my grandmother was a housekeeper for Oliver and the first Mrs. Fetty, and as I stated previously, her dying wish was that her children would be taken care of. My grandmother then married Oliver Fetty to assume care of the small children. I'm searching between 1910 and 1920 for marriage records and also trying to find out when the first Mrs. Fetty died.
If my father was born while my grandmother was employed by the Fetty's I feel pretty sure that Oliver was my grandfather. But if my dad was born before my grandmother became employed by the Fetty's then I believe, as did my dad, that Mr. Fetty was not his father. All those that would have known are now dead. I would never have loved my grandmother any less for being human, but as I said, the past was never discussed.
My father served in WWII, was injured during the Invasion of Normandy, and almost died. I'm sure the 1940's were very difficult for her. After I was born, in 1950, there was a mending of fences between Clate and Iva and my grandmother. She made it a point to visit with them every summer and she seemed as if she looked forward to her visits.

John Merrifield/Merrifield married Priscilla Davis, d/o Anna Neal Davis, 1788 Nelson Co, Ky. Priscilla d 1826 at South Union, Ky & is buried in the Shaker Cem. there. John applied for his Rev War pension in Macoupin Co, Ill in 1833. Researchers say he died there but no proof; other researchers say he "returned to Portage Co, Oh and is buried in a cem there with Samuel and Sarah; Thomas and Eunice." Merrifield/etc records and data of early researchers very confusing/conflicting.
Mary also wrote:
"Davis Merrifield, s/o John & Priscilla, stayed in the Trigg/Christian Co area of Ky. 1850 Cen. Is this Jefferson Davis Merrifield?? Priscilla Davis supposedly descends from the same ancestors as Jefferson Davis, Pres. of the Confederacy. This has not been proven but it is known that Jefferson Davis' ancestors were in Nelson Co before moving further south."
OCCUPATION: Davis was a veterinary surgeon.

I have read many a note on John(the son), Priscilla, and Davis in that community. John Sr. made his home in Ill. and married again..."
On 18 Nov 2000, Mary Prescott Yoder wrote, "I have corresponded with Linda. Her Davis Merrifield is Jefferson Davis Merrifield; though she calls him simply Davis. The Davis branch is supposedly has the same ancestors of Jefferson Davis. Jefferson's ancestors were in Nelson Co before moving further south. NOTE: This source gives 4 Apr 1800 and the following gives 9 Apr. Perhaps Apr 4th was the date of the Bonds.
BIRTH-SPOUSE-DEATH: Information via e-mail Gedcom September 1998 from Glynda Fletcher.
NOTE: She reported his place of birth as "Palatine, Marion Co., Virginia" and 7 Jul 1777. [Marion Co. formed 1842.]
BIRTH-CONFLICT: Sara Harr Rice questions the validity of the 7 July 1777 birthdate.
NOTE: In the IGI is reported a John Harr b. that date in Strasburg, Shenandoah, Virginia, son of Simon Harr, b. abt 1725, Preussen and Eva Rosina Bard or Beard, m. 2 Jul 1774, Shenandoah, VA.
MARRIAGE: FHL Film 840910, Monongalia Marriages, Vol. A-B, 1-2, 1796-1908.

CENSUS: In the 1785 State of Virginia Enumeration, a John Harr is residing in Shenandoah Co. with "3 white souls." This was likely a half brother of this John.
Also listed in Shenandoah Co. with "5 white souls", one dwelling and one other building was Simon Harr, probably this John's father.
In the 1783 Shenandoah Co. Census or State Census Simon Harr is listed with "7 white souls." See II, pages 29 and 30.
CENSUS: 1810 Virginia, Monongalia Census for John Harr (Hare);
Monongalia Co., 1776-1810"; FHL 975.452 D22a. There were eight people listed:
a male age 26-44
a female 45+
f 16-25
2f 10-15
2m under 10
f under 10.NOTE: John would have been about 33 and Elizabeth would have been about 27.
CENSUS: The only Harr in the 1820 Virginia Census is Frederick Harr in Augusta Co.. (Frederick is probably a half brother of John). John probably was in Virginia in 1820, but his last name may have been misspelled or perhaps he was missed in the census. See II, page 22.
CONFLICTS-PLACE OF BIRTH: In the 1880 Booths Creek Township, Taylor Co., West Virginia Census Richard Harr's father was reportedly born in KY. His brother Ashael reported their father was born in PA.
The 1880 Census for Nun and Zimri reported their father was born in Virginia.
In the 1900 Census it was reported that Richard's father was born in West Virginia.
HISTORICAL NOTE: John and Elizabeth (Merrifield) Harr were married in and resided in Monongalia Co., in an area which later became Marion Co., Virginia (West Virginia). The Monongahela is a river that is located in both PA and Virginia, now West Virginia. It forms part of the OH River at Pittsburgh. The county of Monongalia has been reported to be a misspelling of "Monongahela" which dates back to the Colonial time period. jgh

CENSUS: 1830 Census Index has an Elizabeth Harr (and a Richard Harr) in Monongalia Co., 349 East District. NO OTHER HARRS in 1830.
CENSUS: In the 1850 Census an "Elizabeth Harr, age 66, born in PA" and Jane, 18, born in Virginia, are listed. It would agree quite closely with her birth year if she was born in 1783. They resided in Marion Co., Eastern District.
Nearby were Merrick and Sophia Harr, Asahel and Nancy Harr, as well as Nun and Sarah Harr. NOTE: It was hard to read her age, but it appeared to be 66.
QUESTION: Was Jane a grandaughter? Could this be Clemza or Clemenza Jane, Richard's daughter? However, she was listed with her parents on the 1850 Census. Sara Harr Rice believes that it could have been granddaughter Nicey Jane Nuzum, daughter of Sarah Harr and John Nuzum.
BIRTHPLACE: Elizabeth is reported to have been born at Pricketts Fort. The original Pricketts Fort was built in 1774 by the people of Pricketts Settlement as a place of refuge from Indian attack during the Revolution, The fort saw use as a military post.
By late in the 18th century, the fort was no longer needed and was dismantled. The memory of the Fort lingered on into the 20th century and in 1976 the Fort was reconstructed according to traditional descriptions." Louise Righman, 1 March 2001, VA-HAR-MON Mail List. See also "Fort Prickett Frontier and Marion Co.," Balderson, about 1976, FHL 975.454 H2b.

BIRTH-SPOUSE-CHILDREN-DEATH: Information from Carl E. Merrifield who reported that
"As was the custom at that time, the settlers went to Prickett's Fort, at the mouth of Prickett's Creek, each night for protection from the roving bands of Indians. It was here in 1775 that Samuel III was born...and was married to Rebecca Ferrell, who was born 1777 and was also a member of a frontier family."
To them were born the following children:
i. Nelson born 1802, died 1885
ii. Samuel IV died 1877;
iii. Perry died 1871;
iv. Eugenus W. Born 1823,...died 1875 (? Eugenus or spouse Mathilda Jolliffe?);

1 female 40 under 50 (Rebecca MerrifieldNOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Oct 2004]
The above pairing of ages with family members are guess-timates based upon information I found on their years of birth. However, the oldest female is 40 under 50 and Rebecca Ferrell's year of birth from Jan Hornick's database is 1777 which is 10 years off.
1840 - EAST MONONGALIA, MONONGALIA CO., VA

Where are the rest of the children? Again, I guess-timate that the female 50 under 60 would most likely be Samuel's wife, Rebecca, which again has her 10 years younger than Jan Hornick's database.

This is a possible census for this particular Samuel Merrifield based on the son, Sylvanus, who is of the age that Sylvanus L. Merrifield would've been in 1870 (based on the above information). Son, Nelson, was most likely named for his brother, Nelson. Despite a 6 year age difference for Samuel who is reported to have been born in 1809, I believe they are one and the same.M vi ANSON S. or A.
