1820 - MARION CO., VA
Enumeration date began 7 August 1820 (due within 6 months but extended by law to allow completion within 13 months)Name of Head of family - John Merryfield
1 Male under 10 years
1 Male between 16 & 18
1 Male 16 & under 26 including heads of family
1 Male 26 & under 45 including heads of family
1 Female 45 & upwards including heads of family
1 Person engaged in AgricultureNOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, May 2004]
I believe this John Merryfield to be my 3rd great-grandfather, JOHN MERRIFIELD, with his family with first wife, Mary, and sons, John Albareen and Rawley.
Per Ancestry.com, this census contains the confusing redundancy of males Of 16 to 18 and males of 16 and under 26 wherein Rawley was most likely recorded twice. Also redundancy of males Of 26 and under 45, and Of 45 and upwards (ditto for females).
ASSUMPTIONS-SPECULATIONS: [LeAnn McRoberts, May 2004]
Male recorded under 26 and under 45 years including heads of family is John Merryfield born 1780. He would've been 40 years old in 1820.
The male under 10 years is son, John Albareen who was born 1816.
The male between 16 and 18, and 16 and under 26 years including heads of family are both son, Rawley, born 1803.
The female 45 and upwards is wife and mother, Mary. There is no record of her year of birth but most likely this age range falls within proximity. She bore one more son with John, Calvin (born 1821-22), before she died before/around 1830 (possibly in childbirth or as a result of).
1830 - EASTERN DISTRICT, MONONGALIA CO., VA
John Merefield, head of family
1 male 5 & under 10
1 male 40 & under 50
1 female 70 & under 80ASSUMPTIONS-SPECULATIONS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Oct 2004]
The male of 40 and under 50 is probably my 3rd great-grandfather, John Merrifield, who would've been about 50 years of age in 1830.
The male of 5 and under 10 is most likely his son, Calvin (by wife Mary, who died in 1830) who would've been around 7 or 8 years old in 1830.
The female of 70 and under 80 is a mystery. Possibly a mother-in-law since his own mother had already died.
1840 - EAST MONONGALIA TWP., MONONGALIA CO., VA
John Merryfield - head of family
1 male under 5
1 male 5 & under 10
1 male 60 & under 70
2 females under 5
1 female 5 & under 10
1 female 10 & under 15
1 female 30 & under 40ASSUMPTIONS-SPECULATIONS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Oct 2004]
While it is highly likely this John Merryfield is my 3rd great-grandfather, there are some conflicting elements.
The male under 5 could be son John Martin Van Buren Merrifield who was born in 1840.
The male 5 & under 10 could be Richard Merrifield born in 1834.
The male 60 & under 70 most likely could be John himself who would've been around 60 in 1840.
The 2 females under 5 could be Susannah R. Merrifield born 1836 and Elizabeth H. Merrifield born 1838.
The female 30 & under 40 would most likely be John's second wife, Margaret Emaline Hickenbotham who would've been around 30.
The conflict comes with the females 5 to 10 and 10 to 15. Possibly they were servants or visiting kin but there is no way to know who they were.
MARY UNKNOWN 1, 2, 3 was born about 1775. She died before 1830. She married JOHN MERRIFIELD about 1800 in Monongalia Co., VA.

CHILDREN: In the International Geneological Index, 1999 Edition, the following children are listed:
James, b. 1774; Emmanuel, abt 1776; William, abt 1778; SAMUEL, abt 1780; MARY, abt 1782, all reported born in Booths Creek, Virginia.
BROTHERS: "Now and Long Ago, A History of the Marion Co. Area", SLC FHL 975.454 H2l, page 217:
"JAMES...Booth came with his wife and children to now Booth's creek, in 1765. Traveling with him from the Valley of Virginia at this time were three brothers named MERRIFIELD, THOMAS, RICHARD, and SAMUEL. Booth settled on the creek named for him---Booth's Creek; THOMAS, RICHARD, and SAMUEL MERRIFIELD did the same." See M-13 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, CO.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: From the "MERRIFIELD Family Quarterly", pages 89 and 90, quoting Dr. Earl Core who wrote "The Monongalia Story":
"Indian SAM was a brother of Dick and Tom, the three brothers came to Fairmont from Virginia. They came over mountains with the York brothers, Jessie and Jeremiah York. Nathaniel Springer and Alexander the Scotchman. He and these others hacked it out with old Bob Scodnay, Charlie Poke, and Little Billy Burris on the Buchannon. Indian SAM hunted with Sam Bingamon."
"Indian SAM was 6 feet, 10 inches, weighed 275 pounds. His arms and legs were exactly the same length. He had red hair, blue eyes and every tooth as sound as a September buckeye, and he had them all after 60. Indian SAM was a Delaware man, came to Virginia on the Monongahela River then over the mountains."
"INDIAN SAM married 'FLOATING FLOWER IN THE BROOK' (an Indian girl). He first talked with her mother, who then talked with 'Floating Flower's' father and, when they agreed on the price for little 'Floating Flower,' Indian SAM paid the price and led her off into the woods to be his wife. Indian SAM and 'Floating Flower' had a happy marriage but were childless. She was shot and scalped by Indians while he was away. Her scalp was sold to PA authorities for a good price. Two days after she was scalped, SAM buried her. About two weeks later at dusk, SAM heard a woman's voice singing on a ridge trail nearby. As this happened the same time every day, SAM thought it was the ghost of 'Floating Flower' and he would speak to her in Pyankenshaw whenever he saw her appear. He claimed to have seen her ghost many times and talked to her but was never able to touch her, for when he tried she would disappear." S

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: From the "Merrifield Family Quarterly", pages 89 and 90, quoting Dr. Earl Core who wrote "The Monongalia Story", and who also wrote "We need information on the Merrifields".
"At the beginning of the year 1766 the whole region 10 years later to be included in the new county of Monongalia was still an unbroken and uninhabited wilderness, so far as we know. Any Indian habitations were likely only temporary camps. And, following the Treaty of 1763, Great Britain, through the Virginia colony, had enacted laws to deter such adventurous persons as should be disposed to cross the mountains. It was a forbidden country. Nevertheless, during the year 1766 at least seven men made settlements in the region. All of them, it should be borne in mind, defied the proclamation which forbade settlement and in a sense outlawed themselves in so doing. Perhaps they hoped to escape discovery and thought to remain until the laws they were violating were repealed. If such was indeed their plan, they were not disappointed. When the time came as the Revolution drew to its close, they applied for and were awarded homesteads where they settled in 1766. Two of these pioneers were brothers, members of the Merrifield family...Thomas and Richard. Another brother, Samuel, came later for at least his request for a homestead so indicated, in 1773...Samuel Merrifield, it is said, was a member of the squad which accompanied Dr. Eckerlin (or Eckarly) from Fort Pleasant to find the corpses of the murdered Dunkards at Dunkard Bottom in 1756. He was also said to have been a member of a party in 1756 from Fort George (now Petersburg) on the South Branch which overtook a band of Indians five or six miles above (later) Ice's Ferry and killed serveral of them."
"Since 1842 the settlement of the Merrifields on Booth Creek has been included in Marion Co. and further history would be found in the annals of that county. The new county, named for General Francis Marion of Revolutionary War fame, was created by an act of the Virginia Legislature Jan. 14, 1842 with Middletown as the county seat."
Apparently from the same source, Dr. Earl Core: "Indian Sam was a brother of Dick and Tom, the three brothers came to Fairmont from Virginia.

CONFLICTS: Information from Mary Yoder to Jan Hornick, 18 Nov 2000:
"JOHN MERRIFIELD was born 174?-175? somewhere (Va/Mass??). He married 1788 Nelson Co to Priscilla Davis, dau of Ann Neal Davis (says redone Nelson Co mgs BUT the old ones said Annaniah- and have found an Ananiah/AnnAniah Davis in the Censuses of Hardin Co just recently-so Anna Neal Davis is suspect again!!). Seems like the more I dig, the more I come up with!!! Nothing on AnnAniah Davis other than a tax list- don't think he is in the Census but will certainly check!!! If I found him one place- maybe can place him in a Ky Cen (which I do not have at home!!).
"We know that Priscilla was a member of the Shaker Community, dying there in 1826 (she also b 174?-175?- (86-76 years old!!!). Then JOHN (also mentioned in the Shaker Records - so do not think he left & remarried in 1833?? We know he filed for his Rev War pension in Macoupin Co, Il (IF the same one???). I feel that the early researchers were looking for ANY JOHN MERRIFIELD/MERRYFIELD that they latched on to ANYONE they found!!"
"Have deleted all reference of Portage Co, OH from the JOHN (m Priscilla Davis) file. He filed for his Rev War pensions in Macoupin Co IL but he didn't return to Portage Co, OH & die there. The JOHN MERRIFIELD buried there is seperate branch of MERRIFIELDs from Mass."
PRISCILLA DAVIS 1 was born in Dec 1756 in KY. She died in Dec 1826 in South Union, , KY. She married JOHN MERRIFIELD on 27 Oct 1788 in Nelson Co., KY.

POSSIBLE MOTHER: Posted by Mary A. Yoder <mayoder@davesworld.net> on 9 Apr 2000:
John Merrifield/Merrifield married Priscilla Davis, d/o Anna Neal Davis, 1788 Nelson Co, Ky. Priscilla d 1826 at South Union, Ky & is buried in the Shaker Cem. there. John applied for his Rev War pension in Macoupin Co, Ill in 1833. Researchers say he died there but no proof; other researchers say he "returned to Portage Co, Oh and is buried in a cem there with Samuel and Sarah; Thomas and Eunice." Merrifield/etc records and data of early researchers very confusing/conflicting.

"Davis Merrifield, s/o John & Priscilla, stayed in the Trigg/Christian Co area of Ky. 1850 Cen. Is this Jefferson Davis Merrifield?? Priscilla Davis supposedly descends from the same ancestors as Jefferson Davis, Pres. of the Confederacy. This has not been proven but it is known that Jefferson Davis' ancestors were in Nelson Co before moving further south."
