=========================RESEARCH NOTES FROM DOUGLAS STEWART MOORE, JAN 2009
I. Richard lived in Fayette Co., PA for a period of time. At the June 1784 session of the Fayette Co., Court, Richard Merryfield was brought before the court for "profane swearing and for contemptuous behavior to John Allen, Esquire, one of the Jutices of this Court, now attending this Court. And it being proved to the Court that the Deft. swore one prophance oath in these words, "G--d,", the Court fine him 10s therefor and order that he find surety for his good behaviour till next Court in the sum of 50 pounds, and that he be commited till this Judgement be compiled with." [History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, 1882]
II. He was taxed in Wharton Twp., Fayette Co., PA in 1788, and he may be the Richard Marry taxed there in 1786.
III. Richard Merrifield is found in the tax records of Monongalia Co., VA from 1786 until 1798. In 1799 the "Widow Marrifield" and Richard's sons, Samuel and John, were taxed.
IV. When Richard moved back to Monongalia Co. from PA, he resided in Morgantown. He occupied Lot No., 98 on Spruce Street in the northeast section of the town [Core, Vol. 2, p. 126; Zinn, Vol 5, p. 189]. On 16 May 1788, he purchased 400 acres in Pricketts Settlement on the east side of the Monongahela River on the waters of Pricketts Creek. He sold 200 acres of his 400 acres to David Patterson on the same day he purhcased it. Richard lived on this 200 acre tract on Pricketts Creek until his death in 1798.
[Zinn, Vol. 7, pp. 150-151, Vol. 10, pp 204-205]V. Richard and his brothers, Samuel and Thomas, served in the militia during Dunsmore's War in 1774. In 1775 they were payed for their service and were listed on the payorll of Capt. Zackquill Morgan's company at Fort Pitt [Library of Virginia website]. In Feb 1772, the Pricketts moved from Georges Creek, Fayette Co., PA up the Monongahela River to present day Pricketts Creek. In 1774 Pricketts land became a local center of activity. Settlers from up to 17 miles away moved to Pricketts settlement. A militia unit commanded by Zackquill Morgan and Lt. James Chew was formed. The milita began construction of a fort to protect settlers. Evidence suggests that the fort was completed by Jul 1774. In Jul 1774, Lord Dunsmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia, began his campaign against the Native Americans, also known as Dunsmore's War. Many men from Pricketts Fort were involved. HISTORICAL REFERENCES: From Dr. Earl Core who wrote "The Monongalia Story":
"At the beginning of the year 1766 the whole region 10 years later to be included in the new county of Monongalia was still an unbroken and uninhabited wilderness, so far as we know. Any Indian habitations were likely only temporary camps. And, following the Treaty of 1763, Great Britain, through the Virginia colony, had enacted laws to deter such adventurous persons as should be disposed to cross the mountains. It was a forbidden country. Nevertheless, during the year 1766 at least seven men made settlements in the region. All of them, it should be borne in mind, defied the proclamation which forbade settlement and in a sense outlawed themselves in so doing. Perhaps they hoped to escape discovery and thought to remain until the laws they were violating were repealed. If such was indeed their plan, they were not disappointed. When the time came as the Revolution drew to its close, they applied for and were awarded homesteads where they settled in 1766. Two of these pioneers were brothers, members of the Merrifield family...Thomas and Richard."
"Since 1842 the settlement of the Merrifields on Booth Creek has been included in Marion Co. and further history would be found in the annals of that county. The new county, named for General Francis Marion of Revolutionary War fame, was created by an act of the Virginia Legislature Jan. 14, 1842 with Middletown as the county seat."

"The First Seven--The first seven men who located on tomahawk claims in the northern part of the state, as the records show, did not build their cabins near together to form a colony or neighborhood, as might be supposed. They lived far apart, and visits from cabin to cabin could not have been frequent. Thomas Merrifield located on Horner's run in the present county of Marion. Richard Merrifield's place was on Lost run, the exact location being unknown, but near the present line separating Marion from Harrison county. Moses Templin was on the same water course, but it is not known how far from Richard Merrifield."

PARENTAGE-CONFLICTS: [LeAnn McRoberts]
Ancestral File of JOHN R. MALSON and AFN file of Janet Gesas Hornick records birthdate as abt 1761, Janet Hornick believes ALEXANDER may actually be the son of THOMAS MERRIFIELD and not SAMUEL Sr.
Janet says MERRIFIELD researcher, Mary Prescott Yoder, wrote to her Nov. 17, 2000 saying she had indications that ALEXANDER was the son of THOMAS, not of SAMUEL I. Mary writes:
"I don't think that ALEXANDER (m Rachael Boone) was the s/o SAMUEL I & MARY. Simply because it is highly unlikely. I have a birth date of MAY 1-6, 1765 for ALEXANDER (have both dates in my file & don't have cem recds of Nelson Co to know which one is right)...[In] the 1785 tithables of Nelson Co - ALEXANDER does not pay a tithe - so he is under 21 in 1785 (20 yrs old & married in 1787).
"I honestly believe that ALEXANDER was the s/o THOMAS & not SAMUEL I. Too much of a gap between ALEXANDER's birth date & SAMUEL I's. BUT IF ALEXANDER is the s/o THOMAS- how about the mg records in Jefferson & Nelson Cos that is too early to be children of ALEXANDER and Rachael? There a very close relationship between ALEXANDER & THOMAS. Both are supposedly in Jefferson Co 1789, says Gary Hodge, a MERRIFIELD researcher...I lack these records to know for sure one way or the other."
IGI Individual file submitted by Jacqueline Buresh lists him also as son of SAMUEL, born Apr 4, 1765 [LeANN McROBERTS, Nov. 2003]..

===================NAME-CONFLICT-QUESTION:
Mary Yoder, July 1999, questions the middle name of "Hamilton". She has not found any documentation in land or other records that support this. In an e-mail 15 Jan 2000, mayoder@davesworld.net, Mary wrote:
"Early researchers say that ALEXANDER's name was ALEXANDER HAMILTON MERRIFIELD. I have yet to see a record where Hamilton is used as a middle name. He is listed simply as ALEXANDER. Dr. ALEXANDER HAMILTON MERRIFIELD was the s/o of FIELDING & ABIGAIL BEMISS MERRIFIELD - so that is where the ALEXANDER HAMILTON comes in."
RELATIONSHIPS-CONFLICTS-ORIGIN:
Information from Mary Yoder, 15 Jan 2000 via e-mail, mayoder @davesworld.net:
"We now know that the Portage Co, OH MERRIFIELDs were from Mass not Va. Buried in Portage Co is SAMUEL & Sarah MERRIFIELD, THOMAS & Eunice (Wathen) MERRIFIELD (m in Mass); and JOHN MERRIFIELD.
These are the supposed brothers of ALEXANDER that early researchers give - all sons of SAMUEL I & MARY E. MERRIFIELD/ MARYFIELD/MERRYFIELD who sold land to their son SAMUEL II in 1765 Frederick Co, Va.(lots of records from there) giving ch of SAMUEL, THOMAS, JOHN, RICHARD, ALEXANDER, MARY, ELIZABETH, DINAH/DINNA, and RACHEL.
ALEXANDER b Apr 1765; the land record is dated April 1765- how could he be a brother and still listed in the land record?? SAMUEL is b ca 1727 & MARY b the same ca. It is a mystery to me!!! No trace of this ALEXANDER (of the land record) has been found yet.
The son RICHARD m PHOEBE TUCKER and stayed in VA. SAMUEL, THOMAS, JOHN all served in Lord Dunsmore's war- was at Ft. Pitt when paid off. THOMAS MINNIFIELD (MERRIFIELD??) was with George Rogers Clark on his IL Campaign (as was a JAMES MERRIFIELD- from the index of the Ill SAR index of the Clark papers in the Newberry Lib in Chicago- index is on line). Listed in the same index is Paul Matthews (f/o Nelly Matthews who m THOMAS MERRIFIELD Feb 12, 1795 Nelson Co, Ky- is this THOMAS Jr??).
Also listed is Michael Hoofnogle/Hoognagle /Hoofnaigle (did his widow Jennie marry THOMAS MERRIFIELD (SR) Jun 20, 1796 Nelson Co, Ky?). We know that all of the Men: THOMAS MERRIFIELD, Paul Matthews & Michael Hoofnogle was all b 174?-175?. The only identified child of THOMAS was POLLY MERRIFIELD who married George Howard 1798 Nelson Co (m record says d/o THOMAS). Don't know the parents of George (but my branch has connections with the Howard family around 1900 & later).
Then a THOMAS MERRIFIELD m Mariah Leshorn Aug 23, 1806 Williamson Co, TN (she appears as Maria MERRIFIELD on a m. record in Hardin Co--If she is the same). THOMAS is 1825 Tax list of Hardin Co--leading me to believe that he is the son of ALEXANDER & RACHEL (this would explain why MATILDA MERRIFIELD (later married George Lawson Rogers in Hardin Co with surety ALEXANDER- who's husband George with children is listed in the estate papers of ALEXANDER in 1847 as descendants--MATILDA was bound out in Hardin Co as "a poor child of the county").
Bound out also was WARREN MERRYFIELD (who md Susan Smith Mar 18, 1845 Bullitt Co) as "a poor chld of the county"- he isn't listed in the estate records of ALEXANDER. John Brockworth Summers also sued for a share of ALEXANDER's estate (he m a d/o of ALEXANDER & RACHEL who was dead- John m #2 in Hardin Co & ended up in Bullitt Co along with George L. Rogers). Lemuel Smith m Cynthia MERRIFIELD, d/o ALEXANDER & Rachel; but is not listed in estate records because they have gone to IL, along with Juliet MERRIFIELD who m Jonn Reed/Read. A dau m Cadwallader Wallace Moore & is in Washington Co, Ky (where they both died- now have lineage from them- Moores married in Nelson Co with surety Dr. SAMUEL B. MERRIFIELD)."
SECOND MARRIAGE: Mary Yoder sent the following September 2000:
On 17 Nov 2000, Mary also wrote: "ALEXANDER & RACHEL was in Shelby Co until around 1805 (when SAMUEL BOONE Jr died-RACHEL's father). Then have him in 1806 in Washington Co Tn; can't find him until ca 1809/1810 when he is in Hardin Co.

The 3 daughters are NOT John Alex Malson's biological children. Their father's birthplace is recorded as IN as is their mother's. John Alex's birthplace is recorded correctly as VA. Only the boy, Levi J.'s, father's birthplace is recorded as VA.
Malson researcher, Ranny Simmons, concurs that these girls are not the children of John Alex but of Julia's previous marriage to Carter and the girls assumed the Malson surname without benefit of legal adoption.

"Elizabeth lived with the AL MALSON family at Spirit Lake, ID at the time of her death in June 1918 and she was buried there, although there are no records of her death and burial, there, or in the state or county."

1) 1880 Census in Flatrock, Bartholomew Co., Indiana shows a JOHN A. MALSON, 44 years of age born in VA with wife Julia Boyd Carter (SEE John Alex Malson Notes for census details.) Need to verify & obtain copy of divorce decree for John Alex if possible.
2) SEE 1880 Census above where Elizabeth is living with her mother and 1 year old son, William Alvia Malson further indicating she & John Alex Malson were no longer together.
3) Also, another 1880 Census for West Wheeling, Belmont Co., Ohio has Elizabeth's 9 year old son, John R. Calhoon living with his sister, Susannah, and her family with William Henry Bradford. SEE Susannah's Notes for details.
NOTE: Ancestral file of grandson, John R. Malson, confirms 2nd marriage of John Alex Malson.
========================MARRIAGE #2: [LeAnn McRoberts]
Elizabeth's great-grandson, Frederick Winfred Roberts, was told of second marriage to George Washington Winesburg, by his mother, Martha, and he in turn told me.
========================DEATH-BURIAL: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2004]
A Greenwood Cemetery of Spirit Lake, ID transcription has an A L MALSON with date of death as 6/17/1919. This transcription, done by a Mary Garrison, is found on both Rootweb.com & Internment.net.
Given that Elizabeth's date of death, given by grandson, John R. Malson's Ancestral File as June 1918, this is too close for coincidence. Need to investisgate further.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2007]
This is only a "possible" census for Laura Mathilda Malson, who would've been 14 in 1880. Her birthplace and that of her parents is recorded as Ohio instead of Virginia but this was a common mistake.
Per Harriet Malson's info, Laura traveled west with a family named Woods and possibly was in Kansas at the time of the 1880 census. However, she is not in the household of the Woods but that of George Armstrong, his wife, Elizabeth, their son, Sanford and another boarder, William Cook.

DISAPPEARANCE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Per Harriet Jane Malson, 2nd wife of John Rodgers Malson, Laura Mathilda was living in St. Clairville, Belmont Co., Ohio prior to the 1880 census with a family named Wood or Woods. They went west taking her with them and she was never heard from again.
CONFLICT-NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Apr 2004]
Database of Malson researcher, Ranny Simmons, has Laura having married a Fred Mook. I asked him where he got this information and in his return email to me, he said he got this information from a William Marshall Malson of North Canton, OH, whom he also said is 2nd cousin once removed of Laura Matilda Malson, and a descendant of John Malson, son of Daniel Malson.
William (Bill) Marshall Malson is my 3rd cousin twice removed. I plan on contacting William Marshall Malson to ascertain how he came by this information when Laura's own mother did not even know where she was.

======================BIRTH: Martha Adeline Bradford Simms Roberts gave her father's birth year as 1839 or 1841. The 1880 Census records his age as 32 which would make birth year 1848. Censuses from 1900 & 1910 also place birth year at 1848. Still would like to find birth record to confirm.
========================BIRTH PLACE HISTORY: For more than 60 years, Ashland was known as Poage's Landing. It was named for Scotch-Irish settlers, George and Robert Poage, who moved from Virginia in 1790 to settle on the Ohio River. The Pollard's Mill post office opened in 1847 and in 1854 was re-named Ashland in honor of the Lexington estate of Senator Henry Clay. Two years later, Ashland was incorporated as a town.
========================PARENTS-FATHER: The 1880 Census records William Henry's father's birthplace as unknown. However, a 1910 census records his father's birthplace as IRELAND [SEE wife Susannah's Notes for Census detailes].
NOTE: I remember Gramma (Martha Adeline Bradford) telling me when I was a child that a family member was Irish and/or from Ireland but I cannot remember of whom she spoke. This seems to be a confirmation of that and warrants further investigation. [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]

BIRTH: [Source - LeAnn McRoberts]
Martha Adeline Bradford gave birth year for mother, Susannah, as 1854 and birthplace as Sistersville, Tyler Co., (West)Virginia.
However, Susannah's death certificate records her year of birth as 1856 and place as Clarkburg, Harrison Co., VA. Further, 7 censuses (70 years) all place her year of birth 1858/1859. In the 1860 census, she is recorded as 1 year old:

On Elizabeth's lap sits her great-granddaughter, two year old Barbara Simms, daughter of Martha Adeline Bradford Simms (daughter of Susannah and granddaughter of Elizabeth) who sits on the left.
2) Original photograph of Susannah taken in 1945.
These photos were given by to me (LeAnn McRoberts) by my grandmother, Martha Adeline Bradford Simms Roberts, and are in my possession.
3) 3 photographs of Susannah taken in West Virginia or PA given to Nancy Lee Bradford Ragan from Bernile "Pat" Bradford Snodgrass.
Bernile's notation: I'm not sure who is on this picture with Grandma. It was taken in W VA. It might be Addie, or Ellen and Virginia. I don't know. This is the only way I remember Grandma. She was 77 when I was b: .
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2004]
ADDIE probably refers to Gramma (Martha Adeline Bradford Roberts). However, none of the women in this photograph is her.
Also, if the woman in the front is Virginia, she could possibly be the Dad's cousin Virginia whom he last saw in 1978 when visiting Gramma's grave at Stone Church Cemetery. My mother took a photo of cousin Virginia and her husband, Harry Ripple, and this older woman resembles the younger woman in the above photo. Hopefully, I can verify this with Nancy and/or Bernile.

That this Elizabeth Doyle is the daughter of William Henry Bradford and Susannah Malson Bradford has not been confirmed. However, the commonalities make it highly possible, although this census has Eizabeth 3 years older than she would've been if going by the 1880 census where she is recorded as 1 year old. Nonetheless, I feel this age difference falls within an acceptable range. To date, I have not found any other censuses for this family but am continuing to search. I am 99% certain this is my grand-uncle Lewis Bradford. His age and place of birth are correct. However, he is recorded as a cousin to the head of household, George Weeks, but I have not found anyone with that surname in my 3 family lines.
1930 - WEST FINLEY, WASHINGTON, PA
Listed as what looks like "Lus" Bradford, brother of head-of-household, John Bradford. Also in this household is his aunt Marg. J. Crider and nephew, Fred Roberts. His occupation is listed as farmer - laborer on a farm.
NOTE: His age is listed as 44, though information from his nieces, Nancy Lee Bradford Ragan and Bernile Bradford Snodgrass, puts his birthdate at May 19, 1884. This would've made him 46. [SEE Notation under Residence below.]
====================
DEATH SPECULATION: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2003].
Unable to find Lewis in the Social Security Death Index which indicates that he possibily d. prior to 1937 when the Social Security Administration was implemented. However, my mother, Lee Roberts, says that Lewis and Uncle John both fought in WWII. As yet, I have not been able to confirm this and I find it unlikely because both Uncle John and Lewis would've been in their mid-50's at the start of WWII.
NOTATION: According to the Social Security Administration, if someone does not collect social security benefits, they are not listed in the Social Security Death Index.
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Apr 2007]
Found copy of Lewis' WW2 draft registration, dated 25 Apr 1942. He lists his next of kin as Mrs. Ella Westfall, his sister. He was living in West Finley, PA at the time. He was 5'6" and weighed 150 pounds and had gray eyes. He was bald, of light complexion and wore glasses.

In a letter my grandmother, Martha Adeline Bradford Simms Roberts, wrote to cousin May Malson (wife of William Alvia Malson) 12 Dec 1958, Lewis was in PA. She further mentions that he would be 75 on May 19th confirming his birth date.
Also, in an address book belonging to May Malson (given to me by Harriet J.Malson in March 2004), there is an address of sorts for Mr. Lewis Bradford, Washington Co. home, Washington, Pa RD1.

Death certificate also recorded birth month as August.
FURTHER BIRTH MONTH NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Oct 2005]
WWI Draft registration card for John Thomas Bradford has June as month of birth.

ERRORS & NOTATIONS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Relationships to head of household are incorrect except for Susannah. Martha should be indexed as sister, Elizabeth (Barbara) as niece, William and Fred both as nephew.
1) Head of the household J. William Bradford is actually John Thomas Bradford, son of Susannah, brother of Martha Roberts. His estimated date of birth is given as 1886. John Thomas was born in 1886 & his age is correctly listed as 33.
2) Susannah is Susannah Malson Bradford, mother of John Thomas Bradford & Martha Roberts. She was born 1859 and her age is listed as 62 and she would've been 62 in 1920.
3) Elizabeth is actually, Martha's daughter, Barbara Simms, from her marriage to Shriver Simms. Barbara's age is listed as 16 at the time of census. She was born in 1903 and died January 7, 1922 at age of 18 which would put her at age 16 in 1920. Also, both children's father's birthplace is incorrectly recorded as West Virginia. Correct birthplace is PA.
NOTE: Per the 1910 census, Barbara's middle initial is recorded as "E", indicating that her middle name was most likely Elizabeth after her grandmother, Elizabeth H. Merrifield Malson.
4) William S. is Martha's son, William Simms, from her marriage to Shriver Simms. William's age is listed as 11 at the time of the census. He turned 12 in November of 1920.
5) Fred Roberts turned 1 year old on October 26, 1919 & would've been age 1 year 3 months at the time of the census.
6) Gramma was recorded as widowed, however, she was widowed only by her first husband, Shriver Simms. She had remarried in 1917 and my Dad's father deserted them in 1919.
COMMENT: Gramma had written in a letter to me in 1971 that after she left her second husband, she, sons Bill and Fred, then Barbara lived with Uncle John (John Thomas Bradford). This would've been around 1920.
1930 - West Finley, Washington, PA
Listed as John Bradford, head of household. Also in this household is his brother Lewis Bradford, aunt Marg. J. Crider and nephew, Fred Roberts. His occupation is listed as truck driver - general hauling.
His age is listed as 42, though information from his sister, Martha, nieces, Nancy Lee Bradford Ragan and Bernile Bradford Snodgrass, and the Social Security Death Index, puts his year of birth at 1886. This would've made him 44.

PHOTOS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
This photo was given to cousin, Nancy Lee Bradford, by John's brother, Charles Howard's daughter, Bernile Patricia Alice Bradford. Nancy sent a copy to me.
It is marked "Bradfords on bridge." I recognized my "Uncle John" on the far right holding a pick-axe in his left hand. There was a copy of a postcard with it. Handwriting on the back back appears to be J T Bradford on the left side and on the right Mol and something else that is illegible.
This is the only known photo of my grand-uncle, John Thomas Bradford, possibly taken between 1910-1930 when he worked on the railroad. Censuses for him during that period record his occupation as laborer on steam railroad.
PHOTO NOTE: William Alvia Malson may also be in this photo as he worked on the railroad as well in 1910 when the Bradfords and Malsons all lived on National Road in Triadelphia, WV. Possibly brother Lewis is also in this photo who worked on the railroad in 1910 when living with uncle, William Alvia Malson.

COMMENTS: [LeAnn McRoberts]
Uncle John was the only one of my Gramma's siblings I knew. In fact, the only one I knew of at all. He and my Gramma were very close. When she left my grandfather, James Roberts, she, my Dad and his half-brother, Bill Simms, lived with Uncle John for several years. Uncle John also lived near Gramma when she moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and I remember him there often. When she moved to PA, Uncle John had already moved to West Alexander and I presume lived there until he died, though the state of PA has no record of a death certificate for him.
In 1978, my parents, Frederick and Lee Roberts, visited the Stone Church Cemetery and Uncle John's grave, with his half-brother William Simms, cousins Bea and Virginia. At this time, Uncle John's American flag was given to my Dad.
Per my mother, Lee Roberts, both Uncle John and Lewis Frank, fought in WWI and WWII, though I have not yet been able to sustantiate this.

RESIDENCE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Per letter that Gramma wrote to cousin, May Malson, 17 Dec 1957, Uncle John had been in West Alexander, Pa since summer of that year.

HEALTH: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Per letter that Gramma wrote to May Malson, 30 Dec 1953, Uncle John was in the hospital having a vein in his leg taken care of.
DEATH-BURIAL: [LeAnn McRoberts, July 2004]
After not finding a death certificate in PA (Uncle John's place of residence was West Alexander, PA), I tried West Virginia.
I received a copy of his death certificate 12 July 2004 from West Virginia Dept of Heatlh. Uncle John had fallen at home on Maple Avenue in West Alexander, PA, fractured his hip and was taken to Peterson Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia on June 1, 1969. It appears that he remained in hospital until his death nearly 4 months later. He was attended during that time by Dr. Harold Weiler.
The primary cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. The approximate interval between onset and death was "1 hour." Cardio-vasular and renal disease are recorded as contributory.
Uncle John's sister, Mrs. Martha Roberts (my Gramma), was the informant on the death certificate, herself living in West Alexander at the time.
Uncle John received a military funeral (World War I) and was interred at Park View Memorial Gardens, Waddle Run Road, Wheeling, WV on 30 Sept 1969.F vi ANNA MAE BRADFORD F vii ELLA FRANCES BRADFORD M viii CLARK SPENCER BRADFORD SR. M ix CHARLES HOWARD BRADFORD

George is listed on the Civil War Pension Index, having filed on what looks like Dec 4, 1891, possibly 1898. His claim is listed as "Invalid".
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
I have discovered another George W. Winesburg in an 1880 Census. This one was aged 54 and born in West Virginia. The above-referenced George W. Winesburg is found in an 1880 Census in Indiana which ties in with his enrollment with the 138th Indiana Infantry. Now trying to discern which George W. Winesburg married my great-great grandmother.
==================DEATH: [Source - Ancestry.com - provided by LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2004]
George Winesburg's first wife, Mary E. Winesburg, filed for Civil War death pension on what looks like Dec 12, 1908.
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Given the notation above calls into question that this Mary Winesburg is the first wife of the George Washington Wineburg who married my great-great grandmother. Further investigation warranted.

=================BIRTH-PLACE: [Notations from LeAnn McRoberts, Nov 2003]
*Several databases list Samuel Merrifield's place of birth as Croat, England and one references Croat, Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire, England. I researched the history of Bolton Le Moors, now just Bolton, and did not find a "Croat". I did, however, find a "RIVER CROAL". It is possible that a handwritten "l" was mistaken for a "t" and therefore, Croal mistaken for Croat. However, a surname search in the county of Lancashire gave no Merrifields.
David Lingenfelter also references Croal, Lancashire, England, commenting on a small stream in the parish of Bolton-le-Moor and that Croal is now thought to be part of Bolton. He lists "Gazetteer of England and Wales, 1900 as his source.
==========================PARENTAGE: [Notation from LeAnn McRoberts, Aug 2006]
From email correspondence with Tom Gede, descendant of Henry and Margaret Merrifield of Dorchester, MA, Benjamin Merrifield and wife Prudence are of their line of Merrifields and in 20 years of research he has not find a link connecting them to Samuel Merrifield of Virginia and the progenitor of my line of Merrifields.
Further to this, Prudence Stanton was born in 1662 which would've made her 58 years old when Samuel was born in 1720 not to mention that she died in 1714 or 1715, 5 to 6 years before Samuel was born. Someone defiinitely did not to the math here!
PARENTAGE: [Notations from LeAnn McRoberts, Nov 2003]
IGI Individual Record on Family Search website lists Benjamin Merrifield and Experience Birch of England as Samuel's parents. No source submitted.
David Lingenfelter's Rootsweb file shows Benjamin Marryfield (born Nov 15, 1695, died 1780) as father of Samuel. Mother Experience Birch born Aug 20, 1720. He also has them married Sept 1, 1717. How could she be born in 1720, married Benjamin in 1717 and given birth to Samuel on Aug 12, 1720? Other databases as well repeat the same mistake. No one seemed to have checked their dates.
Compounding the confusion, Mr. Lingenfelter also shows Benjamin's father to be Benjamin Merryfield born Nov 10, 1658 in Dorchester, MA and has his mother as Prudence Stanton. This would have Samuel's grandfather born in the USA but his father born in England!
Further conflicting dates. He has Samuel marriage to Mary Elizabeth Overton, born 1717. Samuel's death as 1773 in Virginia USA.
David Lingenfelter lists his source from the World Family Tree, MAY 24, 1999, information from Leland Beck (check@mitco.com).
STILL NEED SOME KIND OF VERIFICATION GIVEN THESE CONFLICTS.
==========================IMMIGRATION: Ruth Merrifield Newhouse (dec'd 1999) FGR
Legal entry in US 8/12/1747; settled in Winchester, Frederick Co. VA, 4 1/2 mi so. of Winchester. Land by patent from Lord Halifax's office 20 May 1762, surv by Wm. Bayless deed recorded 4/4/1765; land rec. in 1765 gives land to Sam. Jr. to be divided between other named children ...
Immigrated w/3 sons; prob died Wash. Co. or Monong.
ADDENDUM: [from LeAnn McRoberts, Nov 2003] David Lingenfelter lists notes from WFT Vol. 7, #192 (same WFT as above?) that Samuel was a farmer who came to America on an issue ordered 12 Aug 1746 for import. In Land records of N. Neck, VA.
Conversely, Bradley Richardson on Rootsweb references a "booke by Dr. Kerns ancestral file and IGI in which Samuel came from England in Jan 1728 as a prisoner for burglery in Kent." (Could this Dr. Kerns be Dr. Earl Core who wrote "The Monongalia Story"?)
IMMIGRATION CONFLICTS-COMMENTS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Nov. 2003]
There is another reference from a Merrifield researcher about this possibility of Samuel being an immigrant prisoner. However, there are numerous International Genealogical Indexes in the British Isles for Samuel "Merrifield," "Meryfielde," "Merryfield," "Mirfield," "Merefield," etc. Any one of these could've been the above-referenced Samuel. And, what of wife Mary and sons, Samuel & Thomas? How did they get to USA? Were they prisoners too? There needs to be verification before this claim can be accepted.
FURTHER COMMENT TO IMMIGRATION CONFLICTS:[Source - Ancestry.com provided by LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2004]
There are 4 immigrant SAMUEL MERRYFIELDS and 1 SAMUEL MEREFIELD. The first 4's year of immigration is 1737-1738. The 5th is 1749. All are in conflict with previous databases as to his year of immigration to America and lends further speculation as to which one of these Samuels is our progenitor "the" Samuel Merrifield. Further investigation is warranted before the above-referenced claims can be accepted.
