Civil War. Union Army. 1st West Virginia Infantry - extract of biography by H.H. Hardesty, 1898, on the First West Virginia Infantry website.
"....When the war of the rebellion was inaugurated, he became impressed with a desire to take an active and leading part. He was 21 years of age when he was enrolled from Wheeling, W. Va., Oct. 20, 1861, as a private in Co. H., 1st W. Va. V. I., and soon made corporal. In the winter of 1861-2, he was ill in hospital at Cumberland, Md., four weeks with fever. In 1862, he was again treated in hospital at Strausburg one week with bronchitis. May 19, 1862, he was honorably discharged at Catlett Station, Va., on account of physical disability. When able, he re-enlisted Sept. 3, 1864, at Wheeling, W. Va., in Co. D, 17th W. Va. V. I. In November, 1864, he was detailed to act as scout and also as provost marshal. He was actively engaged in the battles of Winchester, Strausburg, Blue Gap and several skirmishes. He was granted his final honorable discharge June 12, 1865, at Wheeling, W. Va. He had two brothers in action, RICHARD and ZEDEKIAH the former was captured and died in Libby prison. His wife's brother, Asel served in W. Va. V. I.; his grandfather, RICHARD MERRIFIELD, served in the Continental army during the Revolutionary war. Our subject's son, RICHARD E., enlisted in the standing army in 1889 and served one year. Our subject is a member of G.A.R. at Logansport, W. Va., and his address is Brink, W. Va., near which place he is successfully engaged in farming."

All this close to Wyley Fork at Mobley.
A family member in Mannington has JohnMVB's civil war rifle and a necklace that belongs to Belinda Caroline."

This is the only census I have found for either Jacob or Leander Henthorn, first husband and child of Mary Matilda Merrifield.
I have found an 1880 census for Jacob Henthorn, a widower, with a son, Samuel S., who is 10 years old. Leander is not in that household and possibly did not survive.

However, Ida Jno is not found in other censuses with Mary Elizabeth Crider or Mary Matilda Merrifield and George Crider, so it is not known what happened to her.

Extract from biography by J.H. Hardesty, 1898:
"...When the war broke out his heart was with the Northern cause and he entered the Federal service December, 1861, at Romney, W. Va., when only sixteen years of age. He entered the ranks of Co. H, 1st W. Va. V. I. In the spring of 1862 he was confined in hospital at Cumberland, Md., three weeks, suffering with rheumatism. In the summer of 1862 he was treated in hospital at Strausburg two months with rheumatism and heart trouble. He was honorably discharged at Williamsport, Md., December, 1862, on surgeon's certificate of disability, having taken part in the battle of Winchester and several skirmishes. He had two brothers in service, RICHARD served in Co. H, 1st W. Va. V. I., and JOHN, the former was taken prisoner and died in Andersonville prison. His wife's brother Lewis served in 6th W. Va. V. I., and died in hospital at Grafton, W. Va., of fever contracted in service. Mrs. Merrifield is a descendant of the famous Indian fighter, Louis Wetzel. Comrade Merrifield follows farming as an avocation and his address is Brink, W. Va. "

Jean Merrifield, 76, of Mt. Pleasant passed away peacefully Saturday, May 4, 2002 at home with her family. Her
funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Lux Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Bartlett of Prospect Park Church of God officiating. Burial will be in Salt River Cemetery in Shepherd. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan or to the Pardee Cancer Fund. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home Jean was born December 25, 1925, in Falmouth, the daughter of John H. and Jesse (Chrispell) Martin. She married Raymond F. Merrifield on December 25, 1948 in New Martinville, WV.She has lived in Mt. Pleasant most of her married life. She worked at J. C. Penny for nine years and volunteered her time at Commission On Aging for several years, once receiving the award for volunteer of the month. She bowled for many years with her sister-in-law, Millie Merrifield who preceded her in death by less than a week.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing and her many special friends. She was a member of Prospect Park Church of God. Jean is survived by her children, Michael (Sally) Merrifield of Mt. Pleasant; Rita (Jim) Woodward of East Tawas, and James (Cathy) Merrifield of Saranac; grandchildren, Aaron Lloyd of Blanchard, Edward Merrifield of Mt. Pleasant and Caleb, Kelsey and Jillian Merrifield of Saranac. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray in 1982; her parents; and four siblings.

I remember Clate and Amber and I remember Iva and Will. Clate I. Merrifield married Amber ? and resided in Fairmont until their deaths. There were two sons, Jimmy, who resided in Fairmont in 1979 and Ivan, whereabouts unknown. There were two daughters, Mary Frances Manley, who resided on Park Drive in Fairmont and Marguarite, whereabouts unknown. (I remember Jimmy at my grandmother's funeral in Fairmont.)
I have a note indicating that there is a Bobby Merrifield in California who is the son of Ivan and the grandson of Clate.

Clate's wife's name is recorded as Mildred in the above census. However, from the personal knowledge of Clate's niece, Kathy Ramsay, his second wife was Amber Watkins. Kathy remembers them both and that they both lived in Fairmont until they died.
Ivan was misspelled Ivene.
AMBER WATKINS 1 was born in presumably WV. She died in Fairmont, Marion Co., WV. She married CLATE I. MERRIFIELD.
