Luttie Pittman Carrell was a semi-invalid for the last ten years of her life. She suffered her first myocarial infarction at age 48 and several others in the next ten years until her death of congestive heart failure. Luttie took joy in music, poetry, and all of nature around her. She was happy as a farmer's wife Her blond hair developed a red streak in front when she was in her early 40s. Luttie attended Newtown High School through the 10th grade. Her last year of schooling was with perfect attendance and was awarded a perfect attendance pin and the white leather bound book of "Hiawatha" by Longfellow. She related that she knew it was her last year of school and she wanted it to last in her memory for a long time. At age 16, she had to leave her home and support herself. Her sister, Martha and husband Emmett, took her to live with them. Luttie was a live-in housekeeper most of the time until she married Clayton at age 22. In the late 20s, after the birth of son, John Lee, Luttie developed goiter and had severe weight loss until the cause was found. She had thyroid removal to solve the problem. She had gall bladder and appendix removal, also a hysterectomy. She had pneumonia several times in her life. Luttie told stories about her grandmother and other relatives who were water witches (dowsers) and could remember her grandmother's arms being forced downward when water was located. Luttie wrote poetry in her later years about her family, had a strong Christian faith, and was very sentimental.
