Church Affiliation: Independent Christian Church. Occupation: Farmer.
When Camp Atterbury was built in 1939 west of Edinburgh, IN, John and Rosannah had to move from
the farm he had worked for many years. The farm was located on the road between Edinburgh and
Nineveh which at the time was IN Hwy. 252 and became the main road through Camp Atterbury.
I believe the farm was owned by a family named Pritchard and was located just across the road from
where Wakeman General Hospital was built. John Malson apparently was always a tenant farmer and
never owned real estate, despite what was stated in his obituary. As a youngster, I recall trips to the
farm west of Edinburgh. There were two churches located at an intersection on Mauxferry Road in the Pisgah community, one an Independent Christian Church, the other Methodist. Services were held in
in these churches on alternating Sundays. Though my grandfather was a member of the Christian Church, he attended services in both locations, seldom missing a Sunday. (Written by his youngest
grandchild, Eldon Goble.)He and Rosanna moved to Hege Ave. in East Columbus and worked as a carpenter helping construct
barracks at Camp Atterbury. He lived to be almost 97 years of age and at age 90, was still climbing trees, cutting off limbs.John had twelve brothers and sisters and one half-brother (Forrest Malson). He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over fifty years.
John walked approximately five miles, one way, from South Bethany to north of Georgetown Road to
court Rosanna; they were married his twenty-first birthday.DEATH:

NAME-SPELLING-VARIATIONS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Sep 2004]
Per Harriet Malson, her husband's handwritten records also show Schrimp spelled with 2 "p's". I have come across the name also spelled "Schrimpf" and possibly the second "p" was actually an "f". Variant spellings are Shrimp, Schrimp, Schrimpp, Schrimpf.
Interesintly, the 1860 and 1880 censuses record the name spelled "Shrimp." However, in the 1910. 1920 and 1930 censuses, the name is consistently spelled "Schrimpf." Since Joseph's parents immigrated from Germany, possibly the name was phonetically "mis"spelled by immigration officials, or it was simply easier for them to use that spelling. However, at some point, it appears that Joseph and his sons, Casper and George, chose to revert to the original spelling of Schrimpf.

Casher is the name recorded in the Ancestry.com indexing, however, after enhancing the image and looking very closely at it, Casher is actually Casper. The 1860 Census for Wheeling, WV proves this out and the surname is spelled Shrimp as well. [Casper Shrimp was no doubt the namesake for Joseph's son, Casper.]
Later censuses show a change in the spelling of the surname from Shrimp to Schrimpf. It's likely that when Joseph's parents first entered the U.S. the spelling was either changed by mistake or by intent as often happened. In later years, there seems to have been a choice to return to the original German spelling.

Despite the conflicting age in comparison to the other censuses (Joseph would've been 44 not 49), I feel it is likely that this is the husband of Catherine R. He is alone here, but recorded as married and most likely living apart from his family due to his job as in 1910.

This is a significant census in that it has my great-grand aunt, Catherine R. Malson Schrimpf, with her own family and because it shows hers is the 4th of an extended family that all lived on National Road in Triadelphia, WV at this time.
Also on National Road was my Gramma, Martha Adeline Bradford Simms, with her first husband and their 2 children. Living next door are her siblings with parents, William Henry Bradford and Susannah Malson Bradford (Catherine's sister). Down/up the road was Catherine's brother, William Alvia Malson, his wife and son, his mother, Elizabeth H. Merrifield Malson, his sister, Margaret Jane Malson Crider, and nephew Lewis Bradford:
Catherine's husband, Joseph Schrimpf, is not with them. He is found by himself on National Road South in the census for Washington District, Ohio Co., WV. It is possible he was living separately from his family due to his job as a coal miner.
Likewise, Catherine's daughter, Mary's, husband, Elwood Grooms, is not with them for the same reason. He is found in a census for Bellaire, Belmont Co., OH where he is recorded as a boarder with a young family and works for a stamping company.

It is not conclusive either that this is our Casper Schrimpf, however, I believe he is a likely candidate given his place of birth as well as parents, and locality. Age is slightly in conflict with the Kasper Schrimpf in the 1910 census.

Again, very difficult to confirm or disavow this is our Casper since I have been unable to find him in any census with known family members, and here he is recorded as divorced. However, this location of Ohio may jive with the SSDI for a Casper Schrimpf who d. in Ohio who has the same birth year.
SSDI:
I found one SSDI for a Casper Schrimpf, birthdate: 15 Apr 1892; death date: Dec 1969; state SSN issued was OH.
Death residence localities are all in Guernsey Co., OH: Adams, Brown Heights, Buckeyeville, Cambridge, Cassell, Center, Claysville, College Hill, Fairdale, Harriett, Indian Camp, Knox, Liberty, Sunny Meade, Westland:
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Sep 2004]
Common denominators are locality. Guernsey Co. is right next to Belmont Co. where a number of Malsons lived over the years. The state where the SSN was issued. His birthdate would predate the George Schrimpf I found in the 1920 and 1930 censuses making Casper first b: son and named after Joseph's father. Will send for death certificate to determine parents.M iii GEORGE SCHRIMPF 1, 2, 3, 4 was born about 1894 in most likely WV.

Death residence localities: (all in Washington Co., Utah) Bloomington, Bloomington Hills, Diamond Valley, Harrisburg Junction, Middleton, St. George, Winchester Hills.
2) George Schrimpf, birthdate: 2 May 1891; death date: Dec 1967; state SSN issued. Railroad Board; Death residence localities: Metairie, Jefferson, Louisiana.
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Sep 2004]
I am sendng for death certificates for both of these men to see who the parents are. Number one's birthdate jives with the age of George Schrimpf in the 1910 census. That he received his SSN in California is interesting.
With number two, the birthdate is in conflict. It's possible George eventually went to work for the Railroad. I can try to get a record of that to see where it was issued and what other information it will reveal but will wait until I have ruled out number one.
The interesting thing about number two is where his death residence locality is because George's sister, Mary, married Elwood Grooms and I also found an SSDI for an Elwood Groom with the same death residence locality.F iv MARGARET SCHRIMPF 1, 2 was born about 1896 in most likely WV.

That this William Crider is the future husband of Margaret Jane Malson has not been verified and is speculation based upon his age.
Also, he resides in the same county as George Crider and is 13 years older as he also is in the 1880 census for George Crider and Mary Matilda Merrifield:
Additionally, based on his Civil War pension, William Crider was married twice before he married Margaret Jane Malson, though no names were given for those spouses. It is possible that the above wife and child did not survive the Civil War.

Though William Crider is recorded as a boarder, he is most likely related to George Crider. Both are recorded as born in Pennsylvania, though William's parents are recorded as born in WV and George's Pennsylvania. If not brothers, possible they were cousins or William was George's uncle though the 13 year age difference makes that seem unlikely.
Most likely William Crider met his wife-to-be, Margaret Jane Malson, through George since Mary Matilda Merrifield was Margaret Jane's aunt.
FURTHER NOTE: WorldConnect database of Suzie Snodgrass lists William Crider as living next door. This is incorrect. He is not recorded with a separate house number and was clearly living in the household of George Crider and Mary Matilda Merrifield:

Margaret Jane Malson was 18 in 1880. The Margaret Malson in this census is also 18 and residing in the same county as Margaret Jane Malson's sister, Susannah Malson Bradford and her family that also includes younger brother, John R. Calhoon Malson. Also, Richland had originally been part of Pultney Township (where Margaret Jane was residing in 1900 census). Therefore, I think it is a fair assumption that they are one and the same.

Colonial Merrifields were often connected with Becks. Margaret's great-great-grandfather, Samuel's, daughter, Dinah, married a Jeremiah Beck. While I have been able to connect these Beck with the Merrifields, I have yet to find a link with the descendants of Jeremiah Beck.

========================RECOLLECTIONS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2004]
In my conversation with Harriet Malsom, she said that Margaret Jane was known as "AUNT JENNY" which triggered a memory of my Dad (her grand-nephew), speaking of his Aunt Jenny who had lived with him and his uncle at the time of the 1930 census.
DEATH-BURIAL: [LeAnn McRoberts, July 2004]
Obtained death certificate from the state of West Virginia. At the time of her death Margaret Jane "Jenny" Malson Crider was residing at 2124 Jacob Street, Centre District, Wheeling, Ohio Co., West Virginia.
Jenny was recorded as "dead on arrival" at 6:45AM, 8 Jan 1937 and an autopsy was performed. The cause of death was chronic myocarditis (inflammation of the myocardium, i.e. muscular tissue of the heart) and general artereoschlerosis.
Jenny's name is recorded as Margaret "Virginia" Crider, widow of William Crider b: 15 Mar 1862, Tyler Co., WV. Her father's surname is incorrectly spelled "Mollison." No birthplace recorded for him. No name or birthplace recorded for mother.
She was buried at Linwood Cemetery in Blaine, Belmont Co., OH which is just across the border from Wheeling, WV.

Age for Anna M. (Bradford) Roos is incorrect. Anna would've been 30 years old:
Norman, Anna E. and Helen B. are Fred Roos' children from his first marriage to Bertha who d. in 1910.
Clarke S. Bradford is Anna's younger brother.
1930 - BELLEVUE, ALLEGHENY CO., PA
Dwelling #157 on Forest AvenueANNA M. ROOS, age 39, listed as wife of Frederick F. Roos, age 59, head of household, with son Norman O. Roos, aged 28. Her occupation is listed as Sales Lady in grocery store. They lived at 617 Forest Avenue. Anna's age when first married is given as 15.
=====================MARRIAGE-SON: [Observation by LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2004]
Norman O. Roos is not Anna's biological son, but undoubtedly, the son of Frederick Roos' first marriage. In this census, Norman is only 11 years younger than Anna.
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
1910 Census for Frederick Roos gives family minus wife, Bertha, who d. in 1909. SEE Notes of husband, Frederick Roos, for details.
=====================MARRIED NAME: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan & Mar 2004]
Cousin, Nancy Lee Bradford Ragan, indicated that Anna is listed on mother, Susannah's death certificate as Anna Roos Hoffman. However, I obtained a copy of Susannah's death certificate in March 2004 and it is signed, "Mrs. Ben Hoffman."
=====================COMMENTS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2004]
My mother, Lee Roberts, remembers meeting Anna when she came from Pennsylsvania to visit Gramma (her sister, Martha Adeline Bradford Roberts) in Grand Rapids, Michigan during the fifties. Mother remembers Anna as an attractive woman and nicely dressed, that Anna mentioned she had been married previously and that her husband was a butcher (most likely Anna's second husband, Benjamin Hoffman).
====================FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: [LeAnn McRoberts, March 2004]
Per a letter than Gramma wrote to cousin, (Ida) May Malson. 30 Dec 1953, she sent Anna $5.30 a month.
====================DEATH: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan & Feb 2004]
I have found several Anna Hoffmans in the Social Security Death Index that could be my grand-aunt, Anna Bradford. I have selected the most likely based the Allegheny Co., PA locality.
ANNA HOFFMAN, b: May 22, 1890, d. December 1978; localities - Crafton, Ingram, Pittsburgh, Green Tree, Parkway, Rook, Wabash, Allegheny Co., PA
I think that this is the most likely because of the Crafton death locality and because the 1900 census gives May for Anna's birth month. Also, in looking at the SSDI for Norman Roos, Anna's step-son, he, too was listed with Crafton as the death locality.
Further to this is the discovery that Anna's brother Charles Howard d. in Carnegie, Allegheny Co., PA which is just south of Crafton.
I used this Social Security number in obtaining the death certificate for Anna.
CONFIRMATION: [LeAnn McRoberts, March 2004]
Death certificate confirms date of birth and day of death as 12th of December 1978. Anna is buried at Jefferson Memorial Park in Pleasant Hills, PA

The cause of death was lung cancer. He was buried on 17 Mar 1969 in Highwood Cemetery, 2800 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. He married ALICE GARRAGAUCH. The marriage ended in divorce.
