================

Since my grandparents, Milton and Della Pittman, were divorced in 1917, we never saw any of the Pittmans as children. When old Milton was dying, my Dad got a phone call to go see him in Crawfordsville. We drove down and Mother and us 4 kids sat in the car for about an hour. When my Dad came back, we drove home to Roselle, Il, just outside Chicago. He got a telegram when Milton died, but he never went to the funeral.

I have found some record of all of the 12 except for the very oldest, Jeremiah, who seemed to have just disappeared. The wife of Uncle George W. was shot and killed by her brother in law, not a Pittman, in the early 1880's in Bartholmew Co..

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

Per Ranny Simmons database, James Pittman was the son of Milton Farrow Pittman and Mary Elizabeth Robertson. From the date of death Ranny has given, it would appear the James' mother died at/or shortly after his birth.

Per an 1860 and 1870 census, Mary Elizabeth's surname was not Robertson but "Robinson."

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

It appears that Milton Farrow Pittman is living in the household of his 4th wife's son, since she is recorded as "mother."

CONFLICT: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

Database of Ranny Simmons has Milton's 4th wife's name as "Nellie" Zachery not Mary.

1930 - COAL CREEK, MONTGOMERY CO., IN

PITMAN, DORTHEA L., head, age 68
PITMAN, MILTON F., brother-in-law- age 74

SPOUSES:

Per Ranny Simmons database, Milton Farrow Pittman's 4th wife was Nellie Zackary. He also married a 5th time but no name given.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2005]

Per the Family Group Record I received from Milton's granddaughter, Ludella Pittman Ebinger, Milton's 4th wife's name was Millie Zachery. They married 11 Apr 1918. His 5th wife's name was Maggie Miles whom he married 24 Dec 1921.

OBITUARY:

MILTON PITMAN EXPIRES IN CITY. Funeral Services to be heald at Waynetown Church Friday.

Milton F. Pitman<sic>, 81, resident of Montgomery Co. for the past twenty years, expired at the home of Earl Stephens, 600 Grace Avenue at 4:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon after an illness of four weeks with a complication of disease.

Born in Columbus, Ind., Feb. 20, 1856, Mr. Pitman was a son of Obadiah and Mary C. Madison<sic> Pitman. He was married three times. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, James, Waynetown; George, Chicago, and Elva, near Bloomington; five daughters, Mrs. Maude Perkins, Mrs. Nola Dalton, Mrs. Isabel Wilson, Mrs. Ethel Catt and Mrs. Verna Nichols, all of Bloomington; two brothers, Louis Pitman, Indianapolis, and Obadiah Pitman, Oregon, and one sister, Mrs. W.D. Myers, Crawfordsville.

MARY ELIZABETH ROBINSON 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born about 1858 in IN. She died on 21 Mar 1877 in most likely IN. She married MILTON FARROW PITTMAN on 2 Apr 1877 in Monroe Co., IN.

SURNAME-BIRTH YEAR-CONFLICT: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2004]

I've found an 1860 census for Benton Twp., Monroe Co., IN recording Mary E. Robinson, age 2, with parents William & Nancy M. Robinson. Brother Isaac is 7 months old.

Also, found an 1870 census for Benton Twp., Bloomington Post Office, Monroe Co., IN recording Mary E. Robinson, age 12, with parents William and Nancy Robinson. Brother Isaac, age 10, is also in household. Milton Farrow Pittman was living in Monroe Co., IN at the time of the 1870 census. He and his family were recorded at the Bloomington Post Office as well.

Having found the 1860 and 1870 censuses, and the 1900 census for James Pittman, grandson of W.A. & Nancy Robinson, I am concluding that Mary Elizabeth's surname is therefore Robinson and not Robertson, and that her year of birth is approximately 1858, not 1859 or 1862.

NOTES: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2005]

Ranny Simmons database lists a first marriage for Milton Farrow Pittman to Mary Elizabeth Robertson with a son, James Pittman, born 1878. Ranny's source appears to have been the World Family Tree.

1860 & 1870 censuses confirm that Mary Elizabeth Robertson is the daughter of W.A. & Nancy M. Robinson, and therefore, James F. Pittman, their grandson.

CONFLICT:

There is a IGI Individual Record on FamilySearch.org that has a Mary Elizabeth Robertson marriage to Milton Farrow Pittman. It lists her parents as William A. Robertson and Nancy Jane Swisher. However, it gives no children. It gives a birth date of 1 Mar 1859 which differs from Ranny Simmons' database birth year of 1862, and which conflicts with the above Isaac Robinson's birth of Dec 1859.

It gives her year of death as 1879 (Milton Farrow Pittman is found in the 1880 census with an 18 year old wife, Sarah, and 2 year old son, James Pittman).

There is NO source referenced for this Family Group Record.

Further, in the1860 & 1870 censuses for Mary E. Robinson, with her parents William and Nancy, brother Isaac is also in household and is 2 years younger so it would appear at this point that James' mother was born about 1858 and not 1859 or 1862. SEE NOTES OF MOTHER, MARY ELIZABETH ROBINSON, FOR CENSUS DETAILS.

James's sons, Leroy Glen (or Roy Glen), age 4, and Francis A., age 1, are found also in Union Twp. Montgomery Co., IN living with their grandparents, Samuel L., age 70, & Malinda Busenbark, age 62. Leroy Glen is recorded as "Glenn" and Francis is recorded as what appears to be "Ambrose F" Pittman.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2005]

James Pittman was recorded as a widower in the 1910 census. Sons Roy Glen, age 12, and Francis A., age 11, most likely are James' children with first wife Clarisa Busenbark who had died. Children Ford O., Charles A. and Emma M. are born after 1910 and most likely James' children with 2nd wife, Abigail.

BIOGRAPHY: [Information provided to me (LeAnn McRoberts) via email in Jan 2004 by Ludella Pittman Ebinger, of Arizona, great-granddaughter of Mary Christine Malson.]

My Mary Malson, is Mary Christine, who married Obediah Pittman, who died in 1896, and then she married Henry Moore who divorced her in 1911. She is buried in Paragon, IN under the name of Mary Pittman Moore. Her father was George Malson of Ohio.

My Dad said his grandmother, Mary Malson, was a hot tempered old lady. She also claimed that the family had an inheritance in Britain. We have a picture of her gravestone with her name as Mary Malson Pittman Moore at Paragon, IN.

On the 1850 census in Monroe Co., Ohio, the 4 oldest children are listed along with the note that Obediah and Mary Malson were married within the year.

NOTE: On the handwritten census image, there are asterisks after daughter for Elizabeth, and son for both William S. and Fred. However, I cannot make out what the asterisks denotes.

ERRORS & NOTATIONS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]

Relationships to head of household are incorrect except for Susannah. Martha should be indexed as sister, Elizabeth (Barbara) as niece, William and Fred both as nephew.

1) Head of the household J. William Bradford is actually John Thomas Bradford, son of Susannah, brother of Martha Roberts. His estimated date of birth is given as 1886. John Thomas was b: in 1886 & his age is correctly listed as 33.

2) Susannah is Susannah Malson Bradford, mother of John Thomas Bradford & Martha Roberts. She was b: 1859 and her age is listed as 62 and she would've been 62 in 1920.

3) Elizabeth is actually, Martha's daughter, Barbara Simms, from her marriage to Shriver Simms. Barbara's age is listed as 16 at the time of census. She was b: in 1903 and d. January 7, 1922 at age of 18 which would put her at age 16 in 1920. Also, both children's father's birthplace is incorrectly recorded as West Virginia. Correct birthplace is Pennsylvania.

NOTE: Per the 1910 census, Barbara's middle initial is recorded as "E", indicating that her middle name was most likely Elizabeth after her grandmother, Elizabeth H. Merrifield Malson.

4) William S. is Martha's son, William Simms, from her marriage to Shriver Simms. William's age is listed as 11 at the time of the census. He turned 12 in November of 1920.

5) Fred Roberts turned 1 year old on October 26, 1919 & would've been age 1 year 3 months at the time of the census.

6) Gramma was recorded as widowed, however, she was widowed only by her first husband, Shriver Simms. She had remarried in 1917 and my Dad's father deserted them in 1919.

COMMENT:

Gramma had written in a letter to me in 1971 that after she left her second husband, she, sons Bill and Fred, then Barbara lived with Uncle John (John Thomas Bradford). This would've been around 1920.

1930 - WHEELING CITY, WASHINGTON DISTRICT, OHIO CO., WV
Dwelling #315 on McClelland Street

MARTHA ROBERTS is recorded as a housekeeper for a private family. Interestingly, "wife" had originally been written then crossed out and replaced with housekeeper. She was 46 years old. Head of household was Frank Maltese, age 62, whose birthplace was Italy as was his parents. He immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1903. His occupation was a laborer in a steel mill.

TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTION: [LeAnn McRoberts, as of Jan 2004]

In October 1975, my mother, Lee Roberts, paid for Gramma's headstone inscription at Stone Church Cemetery, Elm Grove, West Virginia. The engraving was done by S. White's Sons of Claysville, PA for a cost of $115.57.

NOTE: My mother found the receipt and sent it to me in Jan. 2004.

FURTHER NOTE: My mother found the photo of Gramma's tombstone and gave it to me, July 2004.

OBITUARY: Washington Observer, dated November 20, 1971 [in my possession(LeAnn McRoberts) as of July 2004]

RECOLLECTIONS: [As told to my mother, Lee Roberts, by Gramma and related to me, Dec. 2003].

When my Dad, Frederick Winfred Roberts, was 5 ot 6 years old, Gramma met a distant relative family from Michigan. She later received a letter asking her to come to Michigan because they had a job for her as a housekeeper. She did so and they hired her. Her son, Bill Simms, either received word from her or had decided on his own to join her. He took his half-brother, my Dad, who was 10 years younger, and hitchhiked to Michigan with him on his shoulders.

Later, when this relative d. , Gramma inherited his house. She sold this house and later bought a house in Grand Rapids for her, my Dad and Uncle Bill to live.

NOTE: By 1930, Gramma was back in West Virginia, Dad was living with Uncle John and Lewis, and Aunt Jenny in West Finley, PA. Uncle Bill was in Wheeling and great-grandmother, Susannah, was living with him.
==========================

BIOGRAPHY:

In 1959, my father, Frederick Winfred Roberts, and I drove his mother and my grandma, Martha, from Grand Rapids, Michigan back to Pennsylvania. It was her wish that when she d. she be buried next to her daughter, Barbara Simms, who d. January 7, 1922, and whom she still thought of everyday [letter to me in 1970].

Upon her return to Pennsylvania, Grandma lived in West Alexander, near the West Virginia border. When her Social Security benefit was no longer sufficient to support her, she moved into the May Belle Manor Nursing Home in Washington, Pennsylvania where she lived until her death November 18, 1971 at the age of 88.

Grandma loved sewing and continued to sew a little everyday [letter to me, LeAnn, in 1970]. In her life, she had been a housekeeper and a seamstress. She continued to work well into her sixties at the Coye Awning Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan for 90 cents an hour.

Grandma was always kind, loving and generous. She often took care of me while my mother worked. Grandma made dresses, stuffed animals and quilts for me as well as baked fresh, homemade bread and cookies. Grandma never had much money but even so she would walk me down to the corner store on her street in Grand Rapids and buy me some sweets. We shared a very close, special bond and spent many happy times together.

[Source of the preceeding account is from my personal experience and memories. LeAnn McRoberts, Dec. 2003]
===================

In 1966, my parents and I drove back to Pennsylvania to visit Gramma and Dad's cousin, Bea. They took us to a cemetery about 5 miles south of their home which my mother seems to remember was Wheeling, WV. Gramma and cousin Bea knew right where the gravestone was. The top name was Shriver Simms and then below Barbara Simms.

My parents returned again in 1978 after Gramma had d. and visited the cemetery with Cousin Bea and Dad's half-brother, Bill. I have a photo of Dad and Uncle Bill sitting next to Gramma's brother, John Thomas Bradford's, grave.

My mother went back again after my Dad had d. , in the fall of 1982. She visited cousin Bea and had Gramma's name put on the gravestone right below Barbara's name. Mom had a photograph of the gravetone and a receipt for the engraving but can't find it. She remembers asking Bea if there were any other relatives buried in this cemetery and Bea said there wasn't. Mom remembers it being on a high hill but not too large. [SEE NOTE for Tombstone Inscription below.]

She was buried in Jan 1922 in Stone Church Cemetery, Elm Grove, Ohio Co., WV. BARBARA was employed as steel mill worker in 1919/1921 in most likely Triadelphia or Wheeling, WV.

MILITARY SERVICE: [Source - Martha Adeline Bradford Simms Roberts]

Bill was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in Europe 1943-1945.

HEALTH: [LeAnn McRoberts, March 2004]

Per Gramma's letter to cousin (Ida) May Malson, 17 Dec 1957, Bill and Katie were okay but Bill wasn't feeling well due a 3 inch piece of shrapnel in his back from when he was wounded by a mine explosion in Germany during WWII.

Gramma later wrote to May Malson 12 Dec 1958 that Bill had heart trouble.

COMMENT: [LeAnn McRoberts]

When I was a child staying at Gramma's house in Grand Rapids, Uncle Bill and his wife, Katie, were usually there.

CAUSE OF DEATH: [LeAnn McRoberts, June 2004]

Per his death certificate, Uncle Bill from cardiac & respiratory arrest due to a long history of severe cardiac & pulmonary disorders. At the time of his death, he was living in Bethany, Brooke Co., WV.

SECOND MARRIAGE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

Rebecca Summers Malson married James H. Chapman, 21 Jan 1895 in Tyler Co., WV. Son Francis Marion Malson, James Madison Malson, Kinsey Malson and daughter, Cassie B. Malson, continued to live with Rebecca and her second husband as evidenced in the 1900 census. Cassie is still living with them in 1910.

They had the following children:

M i GEORGE W. MALSON was born about 1878. He died on 10 Nov 1879 in Tyler Co., VA.
  M ii WILLIAM MALSON.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2005]

I am presuming that William Malson did not survive to 1880 since he is not recorded in that census with father, Atkinson Malson.
M iii MINOR MALSON was born in 1880. He died in 1945. He was buried in Hood Cemetery, Folsom, WV.

BIRTH NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2005]

If Minor Malson was born in 1880, then it was after the 1880 census taken 22 Jun in which his father was recorded. I also have not found him in any other censuses.
F iv ROSELLA "ROSEY" MALSON 1 was born on 22 Apr 1880. She died in Dec 1966 in Dayton, TN.

He resided in California most of his life.

SOURCE: Dave Beyser, 2004 (2nd great-grandson of John Malson, 3rd great-grandson of Daniel Malson).

Great-uncle David was a career Army man. As far as I know, he lived in California most of his life. His birthdate in unknown at this time and he died around 1964. I believe his wife was named Lillian but that's iffy also. They came in W.Va. once a year when I was little and he always gave us a silver dollar every visit. Mom can't remember where he lived in California.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Aug 2004]

I found a cemetery transcription from the Golden Gate National Cemetery with the dates for birth and death.

Great-uncle Charles Albert was married twice. His first wife was Anna Ellen McMannus who died in 1960. He remarried to a Roxie O'Dessie Swaggart. She died in 1969. There was one son...Charles Robert but my sister wasn't sure if he was if he was an adopted son or what. Uncle Charles was pretty much a loner. He lived in Moundsville most of his life. I'll have to see where he was buried:
