SPOUSE #1:

Rachel Thrachel(?) has not been verified as George Malson's first wife.

FURTHER NOTE TO SPOUSE #1: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

Based upon the 1860 Census in Perry Twp., Monroe Co., OH for George Malson, Rachel was most likely his second wife. Her surname is unconfirmed.
FURTHER NOTE TO SPOUSE #1: [LeAnn McRoberts, Sep 2005]

Based upon a will for George Malson found in Will Book #1, page 181 from the Monroe County Ohio Records, Rachel was his wife at the time of his death. Her surname is transcribed in this manner: Rachel (Thrachel).

CENSUSES: [Data provided by LeAnn McRoberts unless otherwise noted.]

1830 - UNKNOWN TOWNSHIP, POCAHONTAS CO., VA

George Malson is indexed after Daniel Malson.

George Malson is indexed with 1 male age 30 to 40 (most likely George himself as his 1796 birth year would've made him 34), 1 female under 5, 1 female 20 to 30.

NOTES TO 1830 CENSUS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2004]

1. George Malson's daughter, Mary Christine Malson, was b: in 1831, therefore the female under the age of 5 must've been a female child that did not survive.

2. Female indexeded age 20 to 30 would be his wife, Elizabeth Courtney.

3. Databases give 2 possible years of birth for Elizabeth Courtney, 1797 and 1807. If b: in 1797, she would've been 33 in 1830, however, if b: in 1807, she would've 23 making her fall within the 20 to 30 age range.

1840 - CENTRE, MONROE CO., OH

1 male 40 to 50 (George Malson)

1 female under 5 (Barbara Malson)
1 female 5 to 10 (Jane Malson)
1 female 10 to 15 (Mary Christine Malson)
1 female 20 to 30 (Elizabeth Courtney Malson)

George Malson is indexed as "Molson." Daughter, Mary Christine Malson, is found in the same census with her husband, Obediah Pittman.

NOTE TO 1860 CENSUSES: [Data provided by LeAnn McRoberts unless otherwise noted.] [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

I have recently found this 1860 census for George Maulson<sic> in Perry Twp., Monroe Co., OH that I believe to be my 3rd great-grandfather and not the George Malson is the subsequent 1860 census for Benton Twp., Monroe Co., OH.

George's age is also corroborated by the 1850 census above.

1860 - PERRY TWP., MONROE CO., OH

MAULSON, GEORGE, age 64, occ: farmer, b: PA
_______, Rachel, age 40, b: OH

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

I believe the George Malson in the above-census to be my 3rd great-grandfather given his age of 64 placing his year of birth to be 1796 which matches the information collected by Harriet Jane Malson and Ludella Pittman Ebinger.

Also, in the 1860 census in Perry Twp., Monroe Co., OH are George's son, Levi Jackson Malson and Andrew Courtney Malson, though the surname has been indexed as "Maulson."

I believe this further confirms that the George Malson in Benton Twp., Monroe Co., OH below IS NOT my 3rd great-grandfather but another George Malson altogether. The age discrepancy of 26 years is too great.

Moreover, databases that have attributed the wife and children in the below census to my 3rd great-grandfather I not believe are his either.

SPECULATION: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb & March 2004]

There is a George Malson with a birth year of 1821, the same George Malson who enrolled with the Ohio Infantry at age 41 two years after the 1860 census. It would seem unlikely these 2 men are one and the same.

The question remains who this other George Malson is.

Further, Malson researcher, Ranny Simmons', database has George married to a "Rachel (Thrachel)" prior to Elizabeth Courtney. It is certainly within the realm of possibility that George may have had a son with Rachel whom he named George. This seems to have been derived from a WFT database. (SEE NOTE TO SPOUSE #1 ABOVE.)

OBSERVATION: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]

On the Family Search.org website, there is pedigree file for a George Malson, born 1826 to a James and Francisca Malson. However, no further information or source is given. They also show up in an 1860 and 1870 census for Gentry Co., MO. [See notes for grandfather, James Malson, for further observations on James and Francisca Malson.]

FURTHER NOTE TO OBSERVATION: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2005]

I have been contacted by a descendent (Jr Hathaway) of the above-mentioned James & Francisca Malson. Mr. Hathaway informed me that his George Malson (the one confused with our George Malson) was a twin and that twins seem to run in his line. Though our George Malson had no twin that we know of, twins run consistently throughout our Malson line as well.

Also, Mr. Hathaway also has a 2nd great-grandfather named William Harrison Malson, born 1832 who was killed in the Civil War. We also have a William Harrison Malson, born 1855, who is the nephew of our George Malson.

Mr. Hathway and I are now persuing the possilbility that our 2 Malson lines are related, possiblity through unknown siblings of Daniel Malson.

LAND PATENTS: [Source - U.S. GenWeb Archives, LeAnn McRoberts, Dec. 2003]

Listed on the Ohio River Survey for the Bureau of Land Management for Marietta Township, Monroe Co., sign date November 1, 1846. George owned a plot of 40.14 acres. This land is next to a plot owned by son, John Malson.

CONFLICT COMMENT: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2004]

While I initially thought George Malson was John's father (referenced above), it is unlikely since John Alex Malson was born in 1835 & would've been only 11 years old. More likely this John Malson is George's brother.

WILL: [Transcription sent to me 28 Sep 2005 by Mary Margaret Summers, 2nd great-grand niece of George Malson.]

MONROE COUNTY OHIO RECORDS

Transcribed by Catharine Foreaker Fedorchak and Wilma Stine Davis

Will Book #1, Page 181

GEORGE MALSON of Jackson Township in ill health, but of sound mind, I am to be buried with as little expense or ostentation by my executor hereafter named. I give, devise and bequeath to my beloved wife, Rachel (Thrachel) my house and lot 1 ½ acres, more or less, my household furniture and property, to my son, John B. Malson - $1.00; to Leroy J. Malson $1.00; to Mary C. Malson $1.00; to Barbara A. Malson $1.00; Eliza S. Malson $1.00; to be paid within one month after my decease. George R. Bucheit, executors. 3 June, 1872 - probated July 16, 1872.

On the last day of July, 1872, an instrument of writing purporting to be the last will and testament of George Malson, late of Jackson Township, was produced in open court for probate.

MISTAKES: [LeAnn McRoberts, Sep 2005]

Mistakes made either by whomever actually wrote the will or those that transcribed it: John B. Malson should have been John Alex Malson and Leroy J. would have been Levy Jackson, Eliza S. should have been Eliza J (for Jane).

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

I think it's highly probable this is the same John W. Benefiel found in the 1870 census with Eliza Jane Malson and that she died prior to this census. Daughter Rosanna's age fits and son John L. is eight years old being born after the 1870 census. Possibly Eliza Jane died in or shortly following childbirth of John L. Rannhy Simmons database lists a son for Eliza Jane and John Benefiel.

The above Martha Benefiel is found widowed in a 1900 census for Logansport, Cass Co., IN.

I have also found a John L. Benefiel in a 1900 census that may possibly be the son of Eliza Jane Malson & John Benefiel. It records a birth date of Jan 1870.

CARTER J. HARRISON 1, 2, 3 was born on 30 Jan 1813 in OH. He died on 10 Dec 1893 in Bartholomew Co., IN. He was buried in Bethany Cemetery, Bartholomew Co., IN. He married BARBARA A. LAND PATENTS: [Source - U.S. Genweb Archives, LeAnn McRoberts, Dec. 2003]

Listed on the Ohio River Survey for the Bureau of Land Management for Marietta Township, Monroe Co., sign date November 1, 1846. John Malson owned a plot of 40.14 acres. This land is next to a plot owned by father, George Malson.

COMMENT: [Notation by LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2004]

While I initially thought John Malson was George's son, it is unlikely since John Alex Malson was born in 1835 & would've been only 11 years old. More likely the John Malson recorded in this land patent is George's brother.

NOTE: Christina Malson is John's mother, wife of Daniel Malson; Elizabeth is most likely his sister, daughter of Daniel & Christenia.

There is also a Frances Malson, aged 14, born in Pennsylvania but I am not certain of her kinship. Malson researcher, R. Simmons, has Amanda as their first born child who died in 1851. He also has that John was married 2 or 3 times, however, he lists Rebecca Bennett as John's first wife.

It is possible that there was a wife previous to Rebecca and that Frances is the child of that union. John would've been 24 years old at the time of her birth in 1836, if indeed, Frances was 14 at the time of the 1850 census.

The only other Frances if that of brother, James Malson, who had a daughter named Frances born in 1847 and she would've been 3-years old at the time of the 1850 census so I think it unlikely the two are one and the same.

BIRTH DATE-PLACE CONFLICTS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2003 & Mar 2004]

Some databases have Daniel b: in Pennsylvania, however, an 1880 Census taken in Ellsworth, Tyler Co., WV, records, head of household JOHN MALSON, listing his father Daniel's birthplace as ENGL (not PA as in most databases), and mother. Christenia's birthplace as PA (her birthplace in most databases which is confirmed in the census for 1850).

That the above-referenced John Malson is Daniel's son is confirmed by his birthplace listed as PA and his age of 48 places his year of birth at 1812. His wife is listed as MARY C. MALSON, birthplace VA, age 45 which would be the MARY C. SUMMERS, known to have been the 2nd wife of John Malson. Living with them is John's stepson, Mary's son, George Summers.

Genealogy.com has a Southeastern Pennsylvania 1680-1800 Birth Index record for a Daniel Malson b: to James Malson & Mrs. Elis. Malson in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. A birth/baptism date is given of 5 Feb 1789. It is not at all unlikely that Daniel could've been baptized at age 19.

On the other hand, this 19 year gap between John R. Malson's ancestral file birth year of 1770 could raise the question as to whether this is the father of my 3rd great grandfather, George Malson.

I have yet to find siblings of Daniel Malson or any verification that he was actually born in Pennsylvania, although there appears to be documented evidence that he died there but this is in question also.

OBSERVATION: [Notation by LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]

That there was another Daniel Malson is in evidence by an 1830 census for Pendleton Co, VA pages 088 and 090. No image available on Genealogy.com.

Two 1840 censuses, 1) Schuylkill Co., W. Brunswig Twp, PA; 2) Monroe Co, Malaga Twp, OH.

It it certainly likely that the birth index record could belong to this other Daniel Malson. Documentation of his birth needs to be found.

=====================

CENSUS:

1830 - UNKNOWN TOWNSHIP, POCAHONTAS CO., VA

Daniel Malson is indexed before George Malson.

1 male under 5
2 males 5 to 10
1 male 10 to 15
1 male 30 to 40
1 female under 5
1 female 10 to 15
1 female 30 to 40

CONFLICTS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2004]

If Daniel's age is correctly recorded it puts him the same age range as George Malson. If Daniel was born in 1770 he would've been 60 years old in 1830 and wife Christenia would've been 55 (1850 census records her age as 75).

It is difficult to speculate who these children were and it is doubtful they were Daniel's children, though not impossible. Possibly they were grandchildren, unless there is another Daniel Malson.

The 1830 census also predates the birth of Daniel Malson (abt 1845) and I can find no other record of a Daniel Malson for 1830.

That said, I do feel it is too great a coincidence that George Malson is indexed right after this Daniel for them not be be related and that the ages of George, his wife and children tally correctly.

1840 - MALAGA TWP., MONROE CO., OH

DANIEL MALSON, head of household
1 male, 15 under 20
2 males, 20 under 30
1 male, 80 under 90
1 female, under 5
2 females, 5 under 10
1 female, 10 under 15
1 female, 20 under 30
1 female, 60 under 70

NOTES-CONFLICTS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Apr 2005]

While it is possible this Daniel Malson is my 4th great-grandfather, there are a number of conflicts and questions and as a result, I feel this is only a "possible" census for Daniel Malson.

First and foremost, 1834 is given in Ranny Simmons' database as the year of Daniel's death. There were redundancies in censuses prior to 1850. The head of household was actually recorded twice. Once with their name, then in the given age range which begs the question, was the male 80 years of age and under 90 a mistake of the census taker because if Daniel had lived to 1840, he would've been only 70 years of age.

While it is possible the 2 males, age 20 and under 30, could've been sons, John and James (neither having married until after 1840), that the female, age 20 and under 30, is daughter, Elizabeth, and that the female age 60 and under 70 is wife, Christenia, as with the 1830 census, there are a number of others in the household, whose relationship to Daniel is next to impossible to determine.

CHRISTENIA ? 1, 2 was born in 1774/1775 in PA. She died on 24 Jun 1851 in most likely Monroe Co., OH. She was buried in Monroe Co., OH. She married DANIEL MALSON in PA.

NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

That twins Adaline and Caroline are the offspring of James and Susan (Susanna) Malson is doubtful since Susan would've been 53 years old at the time of their birth.

More likely they were the children of James' daughter, Frances Malson, and born out-of-wedlock. Database of Rich Mather states this but gives no source with which to corroborate.

Further, Adaline is found in an 1880 census with Frances and her husband, William Hissam. She was 13 years old and recorded with the Hissam surname. Twin sister Caroline is not in that household but in another in the Union District recorded as a servant.

CONFLICTS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2004]

I do not believe that the Daniel Malson in the 1880 census below is the son of my 3rd great-grand uncle, James Malson though he has been mistaken as such by a Malson researcher. Birthplace for the Daniel Malson below is recorded as Missouri, however, both the 1850 and 1860 census record Virginia. Moreover, our Daniel would've been 35 years of age in 1880 not 51.

There is a Daniel Malson, age 40, in the 1870 census for Powder River Valley, Baker Co., OR whose birthplace is recorded as Missouri and it seems likely that he and this one in 1880 are the same person.

Given this major age descrepancy of 16 years, I think this refutes that this Daniel Malson is the son of my 3rd great-grand uncle, James Malson.

Further to this, there is another James Malson, wife Francisca or Frances, who is recorded as having a son named Daniel Perry Malson born 1833 in Missouri as well as a son George Malson born 1826 in Pennsylvania.

This particular George has been confused with my 3rd great-grandfather and I believe this is where the confusion lies. Whether or not these two Malson families are related has yet to be determined.

DEATH:

From the Republic:

"Police Say Frank Malson Fell or Jumped into Path of Auto."

A 70-year-old Columbus man was killed instantly at 7 o'clock Friday -night when he either jumped or fell into the path of a southbound car in front of 121 Gladstone avenue. Death of the elderly pedestrian, Frank Malson, 1021/2, Ross street, was the first traffic fatality in Columbus this year. Malson's death was the third traffic -mishap recorded in the county this year and the first fatality in Columbus since Oct. 20 when another pedestrian was killed on Twenty-fifth street. Malson was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by county coroner, Dr. Robert B. Krueger. Death was attributed to a possible skull fracture and internal injuries. The victim's legs were broken and he also suffered severe facial and head lacerations.

"Fell or Jumped?"

Malson apparently was standing on the west side of Gladstone and either jumped or fell into the path of a southbound car driven by Charles W. Page, 37, 972, State street, police said. Page, who was en route to the Ransom Carnahan service station where he is employed told police it looked to him like Malson "leaped" in front of his car. Page said Malson appeared to be crouched down at the side of the street, and that the next thing he knew the elderly man was in front of his car. Police said Page did not have an opportunity to stop and was traveling only 15 miles an hour when the accident occurred. It was raining, at the time.

"Knocked Few Feet."

Front bumper of the Page car struck Malson, knocking him to the pavement a few feet from point of impact, police explained. Malson, believed to have been enroute home was dead when police arrived. Tobacco Malson apparently was chewing was found on bumper of the car. The car, a 1952 Pontiac owned by Page's employer was not damaged "You could hardly tell the car had hit anything," police Sgt. Eddelman, one of the investigating officers, said. Sgt. Eddelman and Patrolman Junior Buster investigated the accident. Malson was born May 27, 1884, the son of the late Levi and Nancy Pitttman Malson.
