===============================LAND PATENTS: [Source - U.S. Genweb Archives, LeAnn McRoberts, Dec. 2003]
Listed on the Ohio River Survey for the Bureau of Land Management for Marietta Township, Monroe County, sign date November 1, 1846. John Malson owned a plot of 40.14 acres. This land is next to a plot owned by father, George Malson.
COMMENT: [Notation by LeAnn McRoberts, Feb 2004]
While I initially thought John Malson was George's son, it is unlikely since John Alex Malson was born in 1835 & would've been only 11 years old. More likely the John Malson recorded in this land patent is George's brother.

The 3 daughters are NOT John Alex Malson's biological children. Their father's birthplace is recorded as IN as is their mother's. John Alex's birthplace is recorded correctly as VA. Only the boy, Levi J.'s, father's birthplace is recorded as VA.
Malson researcher, Ranny Simmons, concurs that these girls are not the children of John Alex but of Julia's previous marriage to Carter and the girls assumed the Malson surname without benefit of legal adoption.

Further confirmation in the location and his son with Julia Boyd Carter, Harry A. Malson, living with him. Harry was born in October 1882. He at first was recorded as age 17 but this was crossed out and 16 written in. Harry would've been 16 at the time of this census taken 11 Jun 1900. He would've been 17 in October of 1900.

========================DIVORCE: [Information provided by LeAnn McRoberts, Dec 2003]
1) 1880 Census in Flatrock, Bartholomew Co., Indiana shows a JOHN A. MALSON, 44 years of age born in VA with wife Julia Boyd Carter (SEE John Alex Malson Notes for census details.) Need to verify & obtain copy of divorce decree for John Alex if possible.
2) SEE 1880 Census above where Elizabeth is living with her mother and 1 year old son, William Alvia Malson further indicating she & John Alex Malson were no longer together.
3) Also, another 1880 Census for West Wheeling, Belmont County, Ohio has Elizabeth's 9 year old son, John R. Calhoon living with his sister, Susannah, and her family with William Henry Bradford. SEE Susannah's Notes for details.
NOTE: Ancestral file of grandson, John R. Malson, confirms 2nd marriage of John Alex Malson.
========================MARRIAGE #2: [LeAnn McRoberts]
Elizabeth's great-grandson, Frederick Winfred Roberts, was told of second marriage to George Washington Winesburg, by his mother, Martha, and he in turn told me.
========================DEATH-BURIAL: [LeAnn McRoberts, Jan 2004]
A Greenwood Cemetery of Spirit Lake, ID transcription has an A L MALSON with date of death as 6/17/1919. This transcription, done by a Mary Garrison, is found on both Rootweb.com & Internment.net.
Given that Elizabeth's date of death, given by grandson, John R. Malson's Ancestral File as June 1918, this is too close for coincidence. Need to investisgate further.

MALSON, Margaret, other, single, female, white, 18, b. OH, Fa: OH, Mo: OH
ASSUMPTION: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Margaret Jane Malson was 18 in 1880. The Margaret Malson in this census is also 18 and residing in the same county as Margaret Jane Malson's sister, Susannah Malson Bradford and her family that also includes younger brother, John R. Calhoon Malson. Also, Richland had originally been part of Pultney Township (where Margaret Jane was residing in 1900 census). Therefore, I think it is a fair assumption that they are one and the same.

Margaret lived with and was the housekeeper for John Beck, his wife, Annis, their children and his parents. Annis was the daughter of Margaret's aunt, Susannah R. Merrifield and her first cousin.
SPECULATION: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Colonial Merrifields were often connected with Becks. Margaret's great-great-grandfather, Samuel's, daughter, Dinah, married a Jeremiah Beck. While I have been able to connect these Beck with the Merrifields, I have yet to find a link with the descendants of Jeremiah Beck.
1910 - See notes of brother, William Alvia Malson, for details.
1930 - West Finley, Washington County, PA
Listed as MARG. J. CRIDER with her nephew, John Bradford, head of household. Also in this household is her nephew Lewis Bradford, and grand-nephew, Fred Roberts. She is listed as a widow with no occupation and her age estimated at 69.
NOTE: Margaret Jane Malson Crider was born in 1862. She would've been 68 in 1930.
