ERRORS & NOTATIONS: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Relationships to head of household are incorrect except for Susannah. Martha should be indexed as sister, Elizabeth (Barbara) as niece, William and Fred both as nephew.
1) Head of the household J. William Bradford is actually John Thomas Bradford, son of Susannah, brother of Martha Roberts. His estimated date of birth is given as 1886. John Thomas was born in 1886 & his age is correctly listed as 33.
2) Susannah is Susannah Malson Bradford, mother of John Thomas Bradford & Martha Roberts. She was born 1859 and her age is listed as 62 and she would've been 62 in 1920.
3) Elizabeth is actually, Martha's daughter, Barbara Simms, from her marriage to Shriver Simms. Barbara's age is listed as 16 at the time of census. She was born in 1903 and died January 7, 1922 at age of 18 which would put her at age 16 in 1920. Also, both children's father's birthplace is incorrectly recorded as West Virginia. Correct birthplace is Pennsylvania.
NOTE: Per the 1910 census, Barbara's middle initial is recorded as "E", indicating that her middle name was most likely Elizabeth after her grandmother, Elizabeth H. Merrifield Malson.
4) William S. is Martha's son, William Simms, from her marriage to Shriver Simms. William's age is listed as 11 at the time of the census. He turned 12 in November of 1920.
5) Fred Roberts turned 1 year old on October 26, 1919 & would've been age 1 year 3 months at the time of the census.
6) Gramma was recorded as widowed, however, she was widowed only by her first husband, Shriver Simms. She had remarried in 1917 and my Dad's father deserted them in 1919.
COMMENT: Gramma had written in a letter to me in 1971 that after she left her second husband, she, sons Bill and Fred, then Barbara lived with Uncle John (John Thomas Bradford). This would've been around 1920.

Dwelling #315 on McClelland StreetMARTHA ROBERTS is listed as a housekeeper for a private family. Interestingly, "wife" had originally been written then crossed out and replaced with housekeeper. She was 46 years old. Head of household was Frank Maltese, age 62, whose birthplace was Italy as was his parents. He immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1903. His occupation was a laborer in a steel mill.

======================RECOLLECTIONS: [As told to my mother, Lee Roberts, by Gramma and related to me, Dec. 2003].
When my Dad, Frederick Winfred Roberts, was 5 ot 6 years old, Gramma met a distant relative family from Michigan. She later received a letter asking her to come to Michigan because they had a job for her as a housekeeper. She did so and they hired her. Her son, Bill Simms, either received word from her or had decided on his own to join her. He took his half-brother, my Dad, who was 10 years younger, and hitchhiked to Michigan with him on his shoulders.
Later, when this relative died, Gramma inherited his house. She sold this house and later bought a house in Grand Rapids for her, my Dad and Uncle Bill to live.
NOTE: By 1930, Gramma was back in West Virginia, Dad was living with Uncle John and Lewis, and Aunt Jenny in West Finley, PA. Uncle Bill was in Wheeling and great-grandmother, Susannah, was living with him.
==========================BIOGRAPHY:
In 1959, my father, Frederick Winfred Roberts, and I drove his mother and my grandma, Martha, from Grand Rapids, Michigan back to Pennsylvania. It was her wish that when she died she be buried next to her daughter, Barbara Simms, who died January 7, 1922, and whom she still thought of everyday [letter to me in 1970].
Upon her return to Pennsylvania, Grandma lived in West Alexander, near the West Virginia border. When her Social Security benefit was no longer sufficient to support her, she moved into the May Belle Manor Nursing Home in Washington, Pennsylvania where she lived until her death November 18, 1971 at the age of 88.
Grandma loved sewing and continued to sew a little everyday [letter to me, LeAnn, in 1970]. In her life, she had been a housekeeper and a seamstress. She continued to work well into her sixties at the Coye Awning Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan for 90 cents an hour.
Grandma was always kind, loving and generous. She often took care of me while my mother worked. Grandma made dresses, stuffed animals and quilts for me as well as baked fresh, homemade bread and cookies. Grandma never had much money but even so she would walk me down to the corner store on her street in Grand Rapids and buy me some sweets. We shared a very close, special bond and spent many happy times together.
[Source of the preceeding account is from my personal experience and memories. LeAnn McRoberts, Dec. 2003]
===================In 1966, my parents and I drove back to Pennsylvania to visit Gramma and Dad's cousin, Bea. They took us to a cemetery about 5 miles south of their home which my mother seems to remember was Wheeling, WV. Gramma and cousin Bea knew right where the gravestone was. The top name was Shriver Simms and then below Barbara Simms.
My parents returned again in 1978 after Gramma had died and visited the cemetery with Cousin Bea and Dad's half-brother, Bill. I have a photo of Dad and Uncle Bill sitting next to Gramma's brother, John Thomas Bradford's, grave.
My mother went back again after my Dad had died, in the fall of 1982. She visited cousin Bea and had Gramma's name put on the gravestone right below Barbara's name. Mom had a photograph of the gravetone and a receipt for the engraving but can't find it. She remembers asking Bea if there were any other relatives buried in this cemetery and Bea said there wasn't. Mom remembers it being on a high hill but not too large. [SEE NOTE for Tombstone Inscription below.]

Following the death of both his parents when he was a baby, James was taken in by a ROBERTS family in Pennsylvania or West Virginia. He assumed their surname. He did not know, nor is it known what his birth family surname is, nor is it known the exact year of his birth.

WESTFALL, Newt, head, age 50
________, Ella F., wife, age 28
________, Beatrice, stepdaughter, age 17, b. PA
________, Virginia, daughter, age 5NOTES: [LeAnn McRoberts, June 2004]
Confirmation of Ella's marriage to Nute/Newt Westfall. Born in 1893, Ella would've been 27 in 1920. It is unlikely that Beatrice is Ella's daughter. She is obviously Newt's daughter from a previous marriage and therefore Ella's stepdaughter.
I have found an SSDI for a Virginia Ripple, who died March 1981 with death localties in Wheeling & Elm Grove, Ohio County, West Virginia. I believe she could be my Dad's cousin Virginia who was married to Harry Ripple. This SSDI recorded her year of birth as 1915. As Virginia Westfall was 5 years old in the 1920 census, it seems possible they are one and the same.
I've sent for Virgnia Ripple's death certificate hoping that it will confirm her parents to be Ella Bradford Westfall and Nute/Newt Westfall.
FURTHER NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, June 2004]
I have received the death certificate for Virginia Ripple which confirms she was the daughter of "Ella Westfall." Though her father is listed as "unknown", there is no doubt in my mind at this time, that Virginia Ripple was Ella's daughter, my Gramma's niece, and my Dad's 1st cousin.
===============RESIDENCES:
Address book of (Ida) May Malson (date unknown) has address for Ella Westfall of 330 N. Main Street, Wheeling, WV. It seems likely from the other addresses that this may have been in the 1950's.
1957
From a letter written by my grandmother, Martha Adeline Bradford Simms Roberts (Ella's sister) to May Malson (William Alvia Malson's wife) 17 Dec 1957, Ella and her family were in California with her daughter and that she also had a grand-daughter. No names were mentioned.
1958
Another letter written by my grandmother to May Malson 12 Dec 1958, further states that Ella and her family are in Burbank, California.
[Address book and letters given to me, LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004, by Harriet Jane Malson, wife of John Rodger Malson.]
===============MARRIED NAME-KINSHIP ASSUMPTION-SPECULATION: [LeAnn McRoberts, Mar 2004]
Family Group Record of John Rodger Malson (given to me by 2nd wife, Harriet) lists Ella Bradford's spouse as "Nute Westfall."
Ella's niece, Bernile Patricia Alice Bradford, daughter of Charles Howard Bradford, sent Nancy Bradford (daughter of Clark Bradford) a photo thought to be of "Beatrice and Virginia Westfall" (Virginia was a baby) and another photo of 3 women with Susannah Malson Bradford. Bernile's note indicated she thought 2 of the women were "Ellen" and Virginia and a third might be "Addie", my grandmother, which however, is not.
I now believe it highly probable that the older woman in the photo with Susannah was indeed Ella Bradford Westfall, and the 2 younger women her daughters (there is a resemblance).
The youngest of these women looks very much like the woman my mother identified as my Dad's (Frederick Winfred Roberts) cousin, Virginia, in 1978, and of whom I have a photo of from their visit to my grandmother's grave at Stone Church Cemetery in Elm Grove, WV.
The woman identified in the old photo as Beatrice Westfall with baby Virginia looks like a much younger version of another of my Dad's cousins, Beatrice, whom I met as a child when we moved my grandmother from Grand Rapids, MI back to West Alexander, PA. This Beatrice is the same cousin who was with my parents and Virginia in 1978.
SPECULATION: I am now wondering if Beatrice/Cousin Bea is the daughter of my grand-aunt Ella and named her daughter after a sister.
QUESTION: Whether or not Beatrice and/or Virginia are Ella's daughters or are related to Ella's husband, Nute Westfall.
CONFIRMATION: [LeAnn McRoberts, June & July 2004]
From the death certificate of Virginia Ripple, I have confirmed that she was the daughter of Ella Bradford Westfall.
===============CHILDREN-GRANDCHILDREN:
Given the above-referenced information that Ella and her family came to California, and more specifically Burbank, California, I am going to check into the possibility they may still be here.
GRANDDAUGHTER: [LeAnn McRoberts, July 2004]
From an obituary for Virginia Ripple (which had been in my mother's possession), she was survived by a daughter, Frances Griffith of Sylmar, California. Frances is Ella's granddaughter.
ELLA married NUTE or NEWT WESTFALL 1, 2 before 1914 in WV. NUTE was born in 1870. He died ?.
They had the following children:
14 F i BEATRICE WESTFALL 1, 2, 3, 4 was born on 12 May 1903 in possibly PA. She died about Mar 1986 in West Alexander, Washington Co., PA. She was related to her parents by guardianship.
KINSHIP: [LeAnn McRoberts, June 2004]
Evidence suggests that Beatrice Westfall was Nute/Newt Westfall's daughter from a previous marriage, and therefore, the step-daughter of Ella Bradford Westfall and half-sister of Virginia Westfall.
My Dad, Frederick Winfred Roberts, always referred to Beatrice as Cousin Bea. I met her once when I was a child and once when I was a teenager. The last time Dad saw Bea was in 1978. [See the photographs on the We Are Family website on the Cousins Photo Album page.]
===================
NOTE: [LeAnn McRoberts, July 2004]
Obituary for Virginia Ripple states she was survived by a sister, Beatrice Minor. Seeing this name Minor, stirred a vague memory of my Dad mentioning this name.

In seeking information on a the 2nd wife of my fist cousin, John Rodger Malson, I found a notation in Jan Hornick's gedcom by a "NANCY".
