One of Dad's passions was cars and he even raced stock cars in Michigan.  His cars were always number 44.

When I was very young, sometimes he'd take me with him to the racetrack. He also took me with him when he'd go to junkyards looking for used parts for his cars.

One of his prized possessions was a 1936 Chevrolet Coupe that he fixed up.  He named it "Shasta" because, as he put it, "s'hasta have gas, s'hasta have oil, s'hasta have water..."  He was his own mechanic and enjoyed riding motorcycles as well.

Dad loved animals and often came home with some stray dog that he had found. An affectionate, demonstrative person with a gregarious, playful nature, Dad had the gift of gab.  He could talk to anyone and loved to tell jokes as well as play practical jokes on the unsuspecting -- usually me!

Dad was also very artistic and enjoyed drawing or building models of ships and cars. As a tool-and-dye machinist, he made metal Christmas trees for me with
a lathe.

One Halloween, he even crafted a half-suit of armour made of aluminum for me to wear as Joan of Arc.

For my 7th birthday, Dad sold his scuba gear to buy me what I wanted most in
the world -- a horse.  He was a 7 year old Welsh-Arab cross named Jack.
